Position Overview

We are currently seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join our growing Energy and Resources Team across North America. This position reports to the Discipline Manager – Instrumentation and Controls. The role is a full‑time staff employee, providing project support across our Energy and Resources operating unit, with exposure to sectors such as Mining, Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Oil & Gas, and Renewable Energy. The Engineer will evaluate, select, specify, and design instrumentation and control systems or products for projects, conduct calculations, QC, and field work, and support both domestic and international assignments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain adherence to all health and safety rules and regulations for Stantec and clients, contributing to a zero‑harm culture.
  • Develop design outputs through verbal, written, and visual methods including sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and redlines.
  • Lead or support project coordination meetings with internal and external stakeholders, including owner reps, contractors, sub‑contractors, and vendors.
  • Participate in client requirement meetings, PHAs, value analysis sessions, and basic cost estimating.
  • Assist project leads in managing scope, budget, staffing, and schedule.
  • Engage client meetings, which may be remote, and correspond directly with clients.
  • Maintain a part‑time office presence as required.
  • Lead or collaborate on multiple projects when necessary.
  • Develop instrumentation and controls deliverables: instrument datasheets, index, calculations, installation details.
  • Provide P&ID development input and support.
  • Contribute to HAZOP and other process safety assessments.
  • Review 3D models and constructability of instrumentation plans.
  • Evaluate, select, and design all instrumentation systems or products for projects.
  • Develop controls designs and deliverables including shutdown keys, control narratives, architecture, integration plans, panel designs, wiring schematics, and logic and safety deliverables.
  • Design facility/mine‑wide industrial networks: fibre‑optic backbones, leaky feeder radio, hoist signalling, Wi‑Fi/LTE coverage, and select appropriate rugged hardware.
  • Specify, design, and select control and auxiliary systems across mine environments.
  • Lead and support design of control/server rooms, addressing console layout, network segregation, rack design, UPS redundancy, patch panels, HVAC, and physical security.
  • Integrate auxiliary utility systems and their communication networks such as CCTV, security, fire and gas detection, and alarm systems.
  • Develop instrument location plans and cable routing layouts.
  • Generate cable schedules and select cables based on service categories, including LSZH, chemical and fire resistance.
  • Design within hazardous area classification standards (NEC, IECEx, ATEX, ISA) for gases, dusts, and confined space hazards.
  • Specify and select fire, gas, smoke, heat detection systems and integrate them with the facility control system.
  • Produce field instrumentation specifications and material requisitions.
  • Review vendor equipment packages and documentation for purchased instrumentation and control equipment, identifying safety and constructability issues before client issue.
Capabilities and Credentials
  • Self‑starter, able to manage change with minimal supervision and willing to challenge own work and that of others.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with excellent interpersonal abilities and team collaboration.
  • Previous experience as a Lead Engineer on detailed engineering/construction projects within a consulting firm or owners team.
  • Experience in underground mine design is a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and project engineering experience.
  • Ability to lead project teams and mentor junior staff.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites or other offices (~10% travel).
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Technical Diploma in Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical, or Electronics engineering.
  • 10+ years of engineering, design, and construction experience in heavy‑industry sectors such as Oil & Gas, Thermal and Hydro‑Power Generation, Mining, etc.; experience in the Power sector is beneficial.
  • PE licensed in Texas or Arizona, or commitment to acquire a license. Instrumentation & Controls PE license in other jurisdictions is advantageous.
Pay Range
  • Locations in MN, OH, VT, & various CA, NY areas – $90,900 – $131,800 annually
  • Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & various CA, NJ areas – $100,000 – $145,000 annually
  • Locations in WA, DC & various CA, MA areas – $107,300 – $155,500 annually
Pay Transparency: Pay ranges are provided where required by law; final compensation is based on qualifications, experience, and location. Certain roles are bonus eligible; part‑time compensation is pro‑rated.
