Job summary

The Hanover Insurance Group seeks a Senior Systems Auditor to lead complex system audits and ad-hoc projects across the enterprise. This full-time, exempt role may be hybrid or remote and is based in Worcester, MA.

You will plan and execute audits, oversee junior staff, and collaborate with external auditors to evaluate controls and risks. Required are 5+ years in internal auditing, including IT environments, along with a relevant degree and IT certifications.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of internal auditing experience, with at least 3 years in IT systems auditing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in MIS/Computer Science or Accounting/Finance.
  • IT-related certifications (e.g., CISA, CRISC, CISM, CISSP).
  • At least one year of supervising staff.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and lead audits per standards; set objectives and scope.
  • Communicate findings clearly to management at all levels.
  • Direct audits, supervise junior staff, and review work papers.
  • Perform risk assessments and document business risks and controls.
  • Assess proposed controls for new systems and provide improvement recommendations.
  • Prepare draft audit reports and other communications.
  • Support ad-hoc projects and staff development.

Position Overview

The senior systems auditor is responsible for leading system audits and ad‑hoc projects throughout the company. This position also performs audits in conjunction with the company’s external audit firm. The role may be hybrid or remote and is a full‑time, exempt role located in Worcester, MA.

In This Role

Under the direction of internal audit management, the senior auditor will execute the following:

  • Assess the company’s control environment through automation opportunities, improve automation potential, and recommend emerging technology solutions such as machine learning, robotic process automation, business intelligence, data management, analytics, and digital solutions.
  • Independently plan, design, perform and lead all aspects of audits following departmental standards and procedures, including setting objectives, defining scope, designing tests, and managing resources.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of management to ensure full understanding of objectives, risks, controls, and observations.
  • Direct and lead audits, supervise junior team members, and perform a first review of work papers.
  • Perform risk assessments, including identification, evaluation, and documentation of business risks and system controls.
  • Assess the adequacy of proposed controls for new systems.
  • Analyze audit evidence to provide management with an evaluation of the adequacy of system controls and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Prepare clear and concise draft audit reports and other communications.
  • Complete ad‑hoc projects as requested by management.
  • Assist management in supervising audit teams on larger audits.
  • Assist management with staff assessments.
  • Mentor and contribute to the professional development of team members.

  • Timely completion of all assigned audit work in the annual internal audit plan and assigned projects.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of internal auditing experience, with at least 3 years in IT systems auditing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in MIS/Computer Science or Accounting/Finance.
  • Certification in an IT‑related field (e.g., CISA, CRISC, CISM, CISSP).
  • At least one year of experience supervising and training staff.
  • At least two years of experience auditing or managing/supporting Windows, Linux, and/or SQL environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Excellent time‑management skills with ability to prioritize work.
  • Ability to work independently and perform research using a variety of technical and manual tools.
  • Strong analytical skills and an inquisitive personality.
  • Ability to interact and coordinate with all levels of management.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to travel up to 5%.
