Job summary

Ryan is seeking a Senior Attorney to direct, implement, and oversee legal matters related to the firm’s Arizona practice. The role partners with the President to manage staffing, licensing, and compliance across tax, property tax, and related services.

The attorney will supervise paralegals and associates, engage clients, draft agreements, and coordinate with co-counsel. Arizona Bar membership and extensive tax experience are required.

Qualifications

• Four-year bachelor’s degree.
• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
• One-year master’s degree in taxation or equivalent.
• At least twenty years’ experience as a practicing tax attorney.
• Active member of the State Bar of Arizona.
• No character or fitness violations from any state bar association or supreme court.

Responsibilities

• Provides legal expertise where needed.
• Hires, trains, and manages legal staff.
• Provides ongoing professional guidance and direction to direct reports from the Legal department.
• Develop forms, tools and methods of communication necessary to engage clients.
• Draft, send, receive, record, and track specific prospective and client engagement agreements.
• Supervise professional tax training for attorneys and staff and ensure licensing requirements.

The Senior Attorney, RLS directs, implements, manages, coordinates, oversees, and supervises legal matters relating to RLS. This position shall require adherence to the rules of the Arizona Supreme Court and the Arizona Code of Judicial Administration regulating the practice of law conducted by an Arizona Alternative Business Structure. The Senior Attorney will work with the President to manage all matters relating to the practice of law (including, without limitation, staffing, licensing, performance of legal services, ethical compliance, client engagement and representation, and co-counsel engagements).

Duties and responsibilities, as they align to Ryan’s Key Results

• Provides legal expertise where needed.
• Hires, trains, and manages legal staff.
• Provides ongoing professional guidance and direction to direct reports from the Legal department.

Client

• Develop forms, tools and methods of communication necessary to engage clients.
• Participate in marketing training with service delivery professionals.
• Draft, send, receive, record, and track specific prospective and client engagement agreements.
• Work with Ryan professionals to develop, create marketing programs and websites. This includes preparation of talking points for client referrals and drafting marketing referral materials.

Practice of Tax Law

• Provide legal analysis and advice to third party Ryan clients and supervise other attorneys and paralegals in providing legal services to outside clients.
• Manage and have oversight of various tax domain services offered by Ryan, including property tax, transaction tax, severance tax, and federal taxes.
• Representing clients in tax appeal matters including contacting prospects, negotiating Legal Services Agreements, recommending appeals and lawsuits, seeking client approvals for appeals, communicating result, and obtaining approvals from clients.
• Engaging co-counsel for local services and supervising work performed by co-counsel.
• Supervise professional tax training for attorneys and staff and require them to maintain their state professional licensing requirements to provide legal advice on various legal issues.

Education/Experience

• Four-year bachelor's degree.
• Juris doctorate from an accredited law school.
• One-year master’s degree in taxation or equivalent.
• At least twenty years’ experience as a practicing tax attorney.
• Active member of the State Bar of Arizona.
• No character or fitness violations from any state bar association or supreme court.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have intermediate skills in Microsoft® Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and Internet navigation and research.

Certificates And Licenses

License to practice law in the State of Arizona required. Membership to the American Bar Association preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises Paralegals and Associate Attorneys. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Firm’s policies and applicable laws.

Work Environment

• Standard indoor working environment.
• Extended periods of sitting while working at computer.
• Position requires regular interaction with employees at all levels.
• Independent travel requirement: Less than 10%.
• Willingness to work non-standard hours to accommodate global time zones as needed.
