Job summary

Ampirical seeks a Senior / Associate Staff Substation Physical Engineer to deliver accurate high‑voltage substation designs meeting client standards. You will develop general arrangement, equipment layout, grounding, conduit, and BOM packages while reviewing submittals for constructability.

You may act as Lead Engineer and Engineer of Record on projects, mentoring peers and coordinating with project teams. Relocation to Duluth, GA may be requested.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited university
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required
• In lieu of PE: +2 years of additional experience in substation physical design

Responsibilities

• Deliver accurate designs of high-voltage electrical substation components that meet industry and client standards.
• Design substation systems and components including general arrangement, equipment layout, grounding, conduit, and bills of material.
• Prepare construction drawing packages for bids and review incoming submittals for alignment with design and constructability.
• Perform quality reviews of electrical engineering work for both peers and subcontractors.
• May act as Lead Engineer and Engineer of Record for assigned projects.
• May manage the development of project proposals, bid preparation, and project schedules.
• Assist project teams during construction on substation-related issues.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
• Travel to client sites and field locations as necessary.

Salary Range:

Senior Engineer-

• 7+ years of experience

• PE required. In lieu of PE, 2 additional years of experience required

• $106,000-Commensurate (dependent on experience, education, and qualifications)

Associate Staff Engineer-

• 10+ years of experience and PE required

• in lieu of PE 2+ additional years of experience. 12 years of experience required without a PE)

• $124,000-Commensurate (dependent on experience, education, and qualifications)

Profit-Sharing Bonus: Semi-annual, performance-based (10% to 20% of salary)

What You’ll Do

• Associate Staff Engineers are expected to demonstrate deeper technical leadership, broader project ownership, and increased mentorship responsibilities.

What You Bring

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited university

• Professional Engineer (PE) license required

• In lieu of PE: +2 years of additional experience

Experience

• Senior Engineer: 7+ years in substation physical design within utilities or the energy sector

• Associate Staff Engineer: 12+ years in substation physical design within utilities or the energy sector

• Experience with ETAP, WinIGS, and IEEE 80/998

Skills:

• Proficiency in Autodesk AutoCAD, Inventor software (2D/3D modeling experience is a plus).

• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
