Job summary

Ampirical is seeking an Experienced Substation Physical Engineer to deliver precise designs for high-voltage electrical substations. You will prepare detailed construction documents, manage project proposals, and mentor less experienced engineers.

The ideal candidate has strong electrical engineering skills and is proficient in Autodesk software, with a Bachelor's degree and relevant certifications. Perks include a flexible work schedule and profit-sharing bonuses.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited university.
• 3+ years (Engineer III) or 5+ years (Engineer IV) of relevant experience.
• Proficiency in Autodesk tools and strong communication skills.

Salary Range

• 3+ years of experience
• FE required. In lieu of FE, 2 additional years of experience are required.
• $80,000 - $119,000 - Commensurate (dependent on experience, education, and qualifications)E
• 5+ years of experience
• FE required. In lieu of FE, 2 additional years required
• PE preferred
• $92,000 - $140,000 - Commensurate (dependent on experience, education, and qualifications)

Profit-Sharing Bonus: Semi-annual, performance-based (10% to 20% of salary)

Your Role: Experienced Substation Physical Engineer

What You’ll Do

• Deliver accurate designs of high-voltage electrical substation components that meet industry and client standards.
• Design substation systems and components including general arrangement, equipment layout, grounding, conduit, and bills of material.
• Prepare construction drawing packages for bids and review incoming submittals for alignment with design and constructability.
• Perform quality reviews of electrical engineering work for both peers and subcontractors.
• May act as Lead Engineer and Engineer of Record for assigned projects.
• May manage the development of project proposals, bid preparation, and project schedules.
• Assist project teams during construction on substation-related issues.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
• Travel to client sites and field locations as necessary.

What You Bring

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited university
• FE required for both levels (or +2 years experience in lieu of FE)
• PE preferred for Engineer IV
• Engineer III: 3+ years of experience in substation physical design within the utilities or energy industry
• Engineer IV: 5+ years of experience with demonstrated technical depth and project leadership
• Experience with ETAP, WinIGS, and IEEE 80/998
• Proficiency in Autodesk AutoCAD, Inventor software (2D/3D modeling experience is a plus).
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
