Job summary

Pew's Safer Chemicals Project in Washington, DC seeks a Senior Associate, Federal Policy, to advance federal policy actions reducing exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). You will conduct background research, produce policy analyses, and engage with federal agencies and Congress.

Located in Pew's Washington office, the role supports event planning, project management, and cross-team collaboration, with Pew's hybrid work program and occasional travel for meetings.

Description

Pew's Safer Chemicals Project aims to measurably reduce Americans' exposure to harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The project focuses on reducing exposure to the most harmful EDCs in use in the near-term, while laying the foundation for longer-term policy reform to prevent additional harmful EDCs from being introduced. The Safer Chemicals Project is a collaboration between Pew's Environment and Government Performance portfolios.

The Environment Portfolio focuses on science-based, nonpartisan, and sustainable solutions to help protect the planet and people. We work in partnership with governments, Indigenous rights holders, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, local stakeholders, scientists, and other researchers to advance public policy so that nature and communities can thrive.

The Government Performance portfolio provides the nonpartisan research, solutions, and momentum decisionmakers need to ensure our institutions improve the health of people in the United States and enable them to successfully climb the economic ladder. Those goals are pursued through a wide range of the portfolio’s policy-focused projects (with explorations into new areas underway)—from ensuring states’ finances are prepared for future volatility, to unlocking gateways to mental health care, to addressing the nation’s lack of attainable housing.

Position Overview

The Senior Associate, Federal Policy, Safer Chemicals Project, will be part of a team that seeks to advance the project’s efforts to reduce Americans' exposure to EDCs through federal action, such as the adoption and effective implementation of federal policies.

Reporting to the Senior Officer, Federal Policy, the Senior Associate will provide support to advance the project’s goals including influencing federal activities, rules, and requirements around EDCs by conducting background research, contributing to the production of research materials and policy analyses, engaging with federal agencies and Congress, working with partners, supporting event planning, and providing other project management assistance.

Located in Pew's Washington D.C. office, this position participates in Pew's hybrid work program with core days in the office and the flexibility to telework the remaining days. Staff also enjoy four telework "flex weeks" per year.

Responsibilities

• Monitor key activities of federal agencies, Congress, academia, advocacy groups, and other relevant stakeholders that relate to EDCs, chemical regulation, and chemical oversight.
• Cultivate and maintain a broad knowledge of EDCs, chemical and product safety public policy issues.
• Research and synthesize policy-relevant data and trends related to chemical use and safety to inform the public policy team’s efforts to drive action that reduces exposure to EDCs and advances safer alternatives.
• Prepare presentations, talking points, and publications for internal and external audiences.
• Support the planning, organization, and implementation of stakeholder meetings, expert convenings, and other events, including preparation of meeting materials.
• Provide basic project management support for policy projects and track milestones, including maintaining the team’s knowledge management, engagement, and document tracking systems.
• Work collaboratively with communication, outreach, administrative, and contracts colleagues, as well as adjacent project workstreams (Policy, Science, Cross-cutting teams) to advance project goals.
• Participate in activities and meetings that support program and Pew-wide objectives.

Requirements

• Generally, four years of applicable experience.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated experience working as part of a team, fostering consensus, and collaborating with diverse partners to advance pragmatic solutions.
• Proven capacity to juggle multiple priorities, adjust to changing circumstances, organize time efficiently, and remain attentive to details.
• Experience conducting background research, including integrating and condensing information to quickly identify the core of an issue.
• Strong written and oral communication.
• Aptitude to apply a non-partisan, evidence-based approach to projects that require support across the political spectrum.
• Experience working on federal policy, in environmental health, toxics, or a related field is strongly preferred.

Travel

This position requires occasional domestic travel to meetings and conferences.

Work Authorization

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the country for which they are seeking employment without visa sponsorship.

Salary Range

United States Pay Range: $87,200 - $97,500

The salary range represents a reasonable estimate of the annual salary based on Pew's commitment to provide equitable and market-competitive pay. The actual salary offered will take into consideration many factors including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills and experience, internal pay equity, and business need.
