Job summary

Mayo Clinic is seeking a Senior Associate to support Business Development by delivering workflows, analyses, market research, and business plans across multiple projects. You will contribute to strategic planning and collaborate with diverse teams.

You will work within Partnerships, Commercialization, and Technology Development on biopharmaceuticals, diagnostics, HIT, and robotics initiatives, often spanning two work areas and managing several initiatives concurrently.

Job description

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this position is to directly support the mission of Mayo Clinic Business Development. The Senior Associate works as an individual contributor, completing workflows and processes, and developing assessments, reports, analyses, business plans, market research, and other material related to assigned projects. The Senior Associate will manage multiple projects simultaneously and contribute to overall project management.

The Department is organized into three functional work units. Positions are assigned to one of these areas with responsibilities as described below:

  • Partnerships – Source, evaluate, analyze, and develop new business opportunities for Mayo Clinic, including partnerships, joint ventures, spin‑offs, investments, mergers and acquisitions. Identify opportunities and connect them with existing Mayo Clinic units, aligning with the strategic plan and market priorities. Build a network of industry, entrepreneurial, and investor contacts to support business development and commercialization.
  • Commercialization – Evaluate the commercial potential of medical inventions and discoveries from Mayo’s clinical and research activities. Develop and implement technology sales and marketing plans, manage the patent process, identify commercial partners, negotiate license agreements, and advise physicians and scientists on intellectual property and commercialization matters.
  • Technology Development – Facilitate the development and commercialization of Mayo Clinic technologies by collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. Identify and support novel technologies, conduct feasibility and market assessments, facilitate invention disclosure and IP development, monitor industry trends, and support planning and execution of technology development projects.

Specific to this posting, the role focuses on biopharmaceutical and diagnostic technology development, and staff will be primarily assigned to one or more of the following work teams: Biopharmaceuticals, Medical Devices & Diagnostics, Health Information Technology/AI, Health Services & Robotics, or Investments. Each team member typically works across two work areas.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree required (or an advanced degree preferred such as PhD, MD, JD) in business, science, or a related field, plus at least one year of specific experience in business development, finance/venture capital, technology transfer, venture management, IP commercialization, licensing, patents, partnerships, B2B collaborations, investments, startups, or sourcing partnering opportunities in the health care or biotechnology sectors.
  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of parallel experience.
  • Two years of experience directly related to technology licensing for roles within the Commercialization work unit.
  • In lieu of a degree, experience can be credited as follows: four years for a Bachelor’s equivalency, two years for a Master’s equivalency, and two years for an advanced degree equivalency.
  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in a business development/technology commercialization role, navigating complex organizational issues and relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong project management and time‑management skills; capable of managing several initiatives simultaneously.
  • Entrepreneurial/intrapreneurial mindset and strong analytical, resourceful, and independent working style.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Preferred skills may include:

  • Business plan creation, due diligence, market research, marketing plan development, concept analysis, business model development, financial pro‑forma development and analysis.
  • Legal/regulatory issues assessment, monitoring product/operating unit performance, technical sales, evaluation of medical technologies, negotiation, contract drafting, and assessment of scientific and commercialization potential of cutting‑edge technologies.
  • Knowledge of science, clinical or bench research, business principles, and laws and regulations related to patenting and licensing.
  • Experience within an academic medical center, mergers and acquisitions, financial modeling, or analytical valuation.
  • Chartered Financial Analyst certification (or in progress) and national consulting experience may be considered.

Compensation

$107,400 – $150,400 per year

Schedule & Hours

Full time (80 hours per pay period). Monday‑Friday, business hours.
