Job summary

Texas Attorney General seeks an Assistant Attorney General to represent state agencies in court, handle depositions, draft pleadings and motions, and provide legal counsel. The role requires two years of attorney experience, a Texas JD, and active bar membership.

The attorney will manage complex litigation, respond to open records requests, and work across divisions in Austin or Houston.

Qualifications

• Must have graduated from an accredited law school with a J.D.
• Texas attorney license and good standing with the State Bar of Texas by start date.
• Experience: two years as a practicing attorney.
• Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
• Ability to handle complex litigation and open records matters.
• Proven ability to work in person at OAG locations and travel as needed.

Responsibilities

• Represents state agencies in state and federal district and appellate courts, including judicial review and open records matters.
• Takes and defends depositions.
• Drafts pleadings, motions, briefs, memoranda, and discovery; participates in trial and appellate advocacy.
• Analyzes factual and legal issues; performs legal research.
• Provides legal advice and counsel to state agencies.
• Prepares cases for trials and represents agencies in court.
• Represents agencies in administrative enforcement proceedings before SOAH.
• Manages a diverse litigation docket with general supervision.
• Maintains knowledge of applicable laws and complies with agency policies.
• Attends work as scheduled; ensures confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Ability to travel up to 20% and perform duties beyond standard hours when required.
