Job summary

Niantic Spatial in San Francisco, CA seeks a Principal Architect to guide the Product Engineering platform. This hands-on role defines long-term architecture, mentors senior engineers, and ensures cohesive, scalable systems across APIs, SDKs, and services.

You will partner with Product Management and Research to align technical roadmaps with product strategy, drive architecture reviews, and maintain platform health while delivering impactful solutions. Hybrid in-office work is required.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of software engineering experience
• Demonstrated success defining architecture across multiple products, services, and engineering teams
• Deep experience designing distributed systems, cloud-native services, APIs, and developer platforms
• Strong software engineering background with production code in complex systems
• Expertise in modern software architecture, system design, and engineering best practices
• Experience partnering with product organizations to shape technical strategy around customer outcomes
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with cross-functional influence

Responsibilities

• Define and evolve the long-term technical architecture for the product engineering ecosystem
• Ensure products, services, SDKs, and applications share consistent architectural patterns
• Balance short-term delivery with long-term platform health
• Drive architectural decisions enhancing scalability, reliability, security, and developer experience
• Lead architecture reviews and establish engineering standards and reference architectures
• Design and prototype complex technical solutions and contribute production code
• Mentor senior engineers and guides architecture across teams
• Build technical partnerships across Engineering, Research, Product, Design, Security, Infrastructure and Delivery
