Job summary

BB&E Consulting Engineers and Professionals seeks a Senior Architect to support NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic in Norfolk, VA, delivering planning, design, and construction services for a wide range of Navy facilities.

You will work with Navy client teams to ensure high-quality execution, collaborate with disciplines, and lead design efforts across housing, medical, and educational facilities while ensuring code compliance.

Qualifications

  • Registration as a Licensed Architect (RA) is required.
  • Broad knowledge of architectural concepts, codes, and standards for NAVFAC/DoD facilities.
  • Experience with budgeting, planning, and project management; lead teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate with stakeholders and other disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Provide timely, professional architectural support for planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Navy facilities; supports MILCON, demolition, space utilization, and facilities development.
  • Participate in conferences with project stakeholders and coordinate with other disciplines for system coordination.
  • Provide QA/QC review, analyze drawings and specs, review cost estimates and provide services.
  • Develop architectural designs covering programming, space planning, concept design, sustainable design, and cost estimates.
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate conditions, verify scoping, and monitor construction progress.
  • Inspect facilities to identify deficiencies and recommend corrective measures.
  • Support proposal development with Leadership, PM and Business Development staff.
  • Adhere to BB&E Core Values and coordinate with leadership teams.
  • Travel approximately 10% of the time

BB&E is a full service civil and environmental engineering and consulting firm, headquartered in Northville, Michigan, which services both federal and private sectors throughout the United States. BB&E team members provide Environmental Consulting, Facilities Engineering, and Program/Project Management Services to our clients.

Position Summary

BB&E is currently looking for an experienced, self-motivated, and detail-oriented Senior Architect to support our A&AS contract assisting NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic (MIDLANT) in Norfolk, VA. This individual will work directly with existing staff and Navy client teams to ensure high-quality planning, execution, and delivery across a range of facilities design and construction projects. The professional services provided will support a wide range of Navy facility types including housing, community support facilities (dining halls, clubs, fitness centers, child development centers), medical facilities, education/training facilities, maintenance shops, industrial facilities, hangars, administration buildings, and operations/command and control facilities.

This position is based in Norfolk, VA.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provide timely, professional architectural support, services, and consultation for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of facilities for the Navy, Marine Corps, and other Supported Commands, including specific projects, special projects, military construction (MILCON), demolition, maintenance, space utilization, and facilities development.
  • Participate in conferences with project stakeholders and collaborate with other engineering and architectural disciplines to ensure system coordination and integration with specific project requirements.
  • Provide QA/QC review, input, and feedback on third-party designs and recommendations with respect to programming, space planning, concept design, sustainable practices, and code compliance; analyze furnished drawings and specifications, review cost estimates, and provide other required services.
  • Develop architectural designs covering programming, space planning, concept design development, sustainable design, design analyses, compliance with codes and standards, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate existing conditions, verify scoping requirements, and monitor construction progress.
  • Inspect existing facilities to identify architectural deficiencies and recommend corrective or rehabilitation measures.
  • Work with technical, Proposal Management, and Business Development staff to support proposal development.
  • Work with the Leadership Team, Senior Management Team, and staff to ensure BB&E Core Values are being followed.
  • Travel approximately 10% of the time
Requirements
Key Qualifications
  • Registration as a Licensed Architect (RA) is required
  • Broad professional knowledge and skill in architectural concepts, theories, principles, practices, and techniques necessary to plan, design, manage, construct, preserve, restore, rehabilitate, oversee, and maintain a wide range of shore installation facilities projects
  • Knowledge of DoD and Navy guide specifications, Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), and policies; the International Building Code; the Life Safety Code; applicable industry codes and standards; and standard architectural design practices
  • Knowledge of local, state, federal, and foreign country laws, codes, and other statutory requirements affecting architectural design throughout the NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic AOR
  • Knowledge of related architectural and engineering disciplines and their associated impacts on architectural design
  • Knowledge of and experience with Autodesk software, including AutoCAD and Revit; Microsoft Office; architectural design and analysis software; and other applicable DoD computer systems and software used by the Command
  • Ability to document analytical results, review and consolidate others' findings, evaluate recommendations, and deliver oral presentations regarding proposed designs and study results
  • Knowledge of budgeting, planning, and project management techniques, including the ability to coordinate the work of others and lead teams
  • Knowledge of and full compliance with applicable safety policies and guidance, including the proper use of personal protective equipment
  • Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences
  • Self-Starter: Highly motivated and able to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independently
  • Experience, Certification, and Education
  • Experience: A minimum of 10 years of professional, code-compliant architectural facilities design experience involving new construction and renovations is required
  • Certification and Training: Registration as a Licensed Architect (RA) is preferred but not required
  • Education: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), supplemented by hands‑on facilities design experience, is required.
