Job summary

Thomson Reuters Labs seeks a Senior Applied Scientist to own end-to-end applied research that drives product innovation in legal, tax, and regulatory domains. You will translate business challenges into scalable AI capabilities and mentor scientists to grow impact.

This role blends research with production delivery, requiring senior judgment to decide what to build, how to evaluate, and when it is ready for shipping, in a hybrid US-based environment.

Qualifications

• PhD or Master’s degree in CS/ML or related field.
• 5+ years hands-on experience building and deploying production IR, NLP, ML, or GenAI systems.
• Experience leading end-to-end AI project delivery in cross-functional environments.
• Outstanding technical judgment and evaluation expertise.
• Publications in ACL/EMNLP/NAACL/NeurIPS/ICLR/SIGIR/KDD.

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end applied research projects from experimentation to scalable, production-ready AI capabilities.
• Drive product innovation in legal intelligence, tax automation, and regulatory compliance.
• Translate business challenges into technical solutions and determine feasibility.
• Design and evaluate RAG architectures, agentic frameworks, and tool-using systems for complex professional use cases.
• Apply senior-level technical judgment and rigorous evaluation to ensure solutions meet the quality bar.
• Develop novel methods for complex professional domains such as medical, tax, or law.
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners to deliver AI projects from concept to customer.
• Influence technical direction within your team through clear communication.
• Mentor scientists and help them grow.
• Start to grow and scale your impact beyond individual projects.
