Job summary

Onterris is seeking a Senior Applications Engineer for our Portland, ME office. You will join a global AE team, leading proposals across North America and Australia and reporting to the Director of Applications Engineering.

We offer a challenging role with ownership over technical solutions, strategic input on commercial initiatives, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. Travel is expected up to 10% domestically and internationally, with a performance-based annual bonus.

Qualifications

• BS Engineering or equivalent technical degree required.
• 8+ years of experience as an applications engineer, process engineer, project engineer, project manager, or related role.
• 5+ years of experience in water treatment process systems solutions.
• Professional Engineer license preferred, not required.
• Persuasive presentation and effective communication skills—both verbal and written—across cultures.
• Willingness and ability to travel 10% of the time, domestically and internationally.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality technical solutions and proposals that drive profitable growth, with clear priorities and strong team performance.
• Inform commercial strategy, identify product and market growth opportunities, and improve proposal win-rate and speed-to-customer.
• Collaborate with sales, design engineering, process SMEs, operations, project delivery, safety, procurement, and vendors to align technical solutions with commercial goals and maintain cost data.
• Maintain awareness of competitor offerings, positioning, and market trends to inform strategy and increase market share.
• Ensure organized handoff from proposals to project execution following contract award.
• Direct and coordinate technical reviews for bid requests, contributing to risk evaluation and bid/no-bid decisions.
• Coordinate with procurement and vendors to maintain current cost data for pricing.

Education

BS Engineering or equivalent technical degree

8+ years of experience as an applications engineer, process engineer, project engineer, project manager, or related role

5+ years of experience in water treatment process systems solutions

Professional Engineer license preferred

Persuasive presentation and effective communication skills

Willingness to travel 10% domestically and internationally

A Day in the Life

We're looking for a Senior Applications Engineer to join our Portland, ME office. As a key member of the team, this position will report to the Director of Applications Engineering. You will join as senior member of our global applications engineering (AE) team, focused on responding to customer and internal requests for the development of proposals throughout North America and Australia.

The compensation range for this role is $105,000 to $150,000, in addition to an annual bonus, commensurate with experience, skills, and geographic location.

To thrive in this role, you’ll be comfortable taking ownership of the following responsibilities:

• Deliver high-quality technical solutions and proposals that drive profitable growth, ensuring clear priorities, accountability, and strong team performance.
• Serve as a key member of the leadership team by informing commercial strategy, identifying product and market growth opportunities, and improving proposal win-rate and speed-to-customer.
• Partner closely with sales, design engineering, process SMEs, operations, project delivery, safety, procurement, and key vendors to align technical solutions with commercial goals, maintain accurate cost data and ensure consistent execution across stakeholders.
• Maintain awareness of competitor offerings, positioning, and market trends to inform strategy development and support increased market share.
• Ensure organized and complete handoff from proposals to project execution following contract award.
• Direct and coordinate technical reviews for bid requests, contributing to risk evaluation and bid/no-bid decisions.
• Partner with procurement and key vendors to maintain accurate, current cost data for standard and custom equipment pricing.
