DescriptionUnder the direct supervision of the Area Supervisor, the Senior Animal Technician is responsible for performing routine animal husbandry tasks at an operational level. Working closely with the supervisor and receiving regular guidance, the Senior Animal Technician ensures the completion of all assigned tasks in accordance with departmental protocols. Additional assignments are delegated by the Area Supervisor on a project-by-project basis, with routine daily reviews conducted to ensure the quality and accuracy of work.
Salary: $26.67 - 32.94 Hourly
QualificationsRequired:
- Working knowledge of animal husbandry procedures sufficient to care for laboratory animals in an experimental environment, attested by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the ALAT level or higher.
- Knowledge of habits and appearances of laboratory animals sufficient to notice deviations from normal.
- Skill in handling a variety of animals in different situations to prevent injury or distress to the animal or self.
- Ability to lift 50-pound bags of feed, handle 60-70 pound animals, and push 200-300 pound cage racks of animals.
- Knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing materials and techniques to maintain a healthful environment.
- Skill in reading English and numbers to follow instructions, maintain records, and identify specific animals.
- Skill in using basic English words and phrases to complete identification cards and inventory forms.
- Ability to communicate effectively on a one-to-one basis with appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain information, explain changes in animal behavior and appearance, and collaborate with supervisors and co-workers.
- Ability to treat animals, including PO, SQ, and IM injections, with knowledge of proper labeling and disposal of euthanized animals, including bio-hazardous ones.
- Knowledge of contamination control practices, including engineering, administrative, and procedural controls for pathogen containment, disinfection, and waste handling in bio-containment animal facilities up to BSL2 practices.
- Willingness to participate in weekend/holiday work rotations and occasional overtime duties.
