Job summary

The Senior Environmental Engineer at Smurfit Westrock in Covington, VA will oversee compliance with air regulations, permits, and environmental programs across a large Kraft pulp and paper mill. You will mentor staff, drive reporting, and implement strategic environmental plans.

You will manage Title V and related air regulatory activities, EPCRA programs, TSCA reporting, and permit development, while partnering with internal teams to ensure safe, compliant operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical, environmental engineering, or environmental science.
• At least five years’ experience in industry and with environmental compliance, preferably in pulp and paper.
• Experience in managing and developing direct reports.
• Expertise in compliance with and managing Air Permitting, Title V, air related regulatory programs, management of stack testing programs, and EPCRA programs.
• Experience with permit development and implementation.
• Proficient computer skills (including MS Office, most importantly Excel and Microsoft Word).
• Willing and able to walk and work in an industrial location indoors or outdoors, including walking up and down steps and ladders with all safety equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves, steel-toed shoes, etc.)
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
• Excellent planning, organizational, time management and prioritization skills.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with air permits and regulatory programs across the mill.
• Develop and update environmental plans and programs.
• Assist in developing permit applications for regulatory submissions.
• Manage reporting, monitoring, training, policies, procedures, and maintenance programs.
• Support Title V and related air regulatory activities, including stack testing and EPCRA reporting.
• Coordinate environmental releases response and TSCA reporting.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on sustainability efforts.
• Provide leadership and development for environmental team members.
