Job description

The Onyx Research Data Tech organization at GSK is responsible for the research data ecosystem that enables data analysis and exploration at scale. We collaborate with scientists across GSK to understand their challenges and develop tailored solutions, ensuring they have timely access to the right data and insights to accelerate medical discovery. Our ultimate goal is to advance disease understanding through predictive and powerful methods.

Onyx is a comprehensive team comprising product and portfolio leadership, data engineering, infrastructure and DevOps, data/metadata/knowledge platforms, and AI/ML and analysis platforms, all aimed at:

  • Creating a next-generation, metadata- and automation-driven data experience for GSK's scientists, engineers, and decision-makers, increasing productivity and reducing time spent on data mechanics.
  • Providing top-tier AI/ML and data analysis environments to enhance predictive capabilities and attract leading talent.
  • Engineering our data at scale as a unified asset to unlock its value in real-time.

GSK envisions a future where AI will enable the development of transformative medicines through genetics, functional genomics, and machine learning, as well as improve diagnosis and treatment. We seek a highly skilled Senior AI/ML Platform Engineer to realize this vision.

Our AI/ML Platform Engineering team is building an advanced platform of tools and services for MLOps/DevOps across Cloud and HPC environments. Our mission is to shorten development cycles and elevate engineering standards across AI/ML teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a key engineer for the AIML platform, contributing expertise to related technical areas such as GenAI, DevOps, Compute, and Cloud.
  • Design major software components of the AIML Platform, develop production code in Python, and participate in design and PR reviews.
  • Ensure usability, reproducibility, and performance of key platform components at scale.
  • Integrate with DataOps and Data Engineering products for optimal ML training performance.
  • Lead or participate in scrum teams, providing technical guidance.
  • Innovate strategies and workflows to improve end-user experience.
  • Promote best practices in engineering discipline, CI/CD, and continuous improvement.

Why You?

Basic Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • 6+ years of industry experience in software engineering with a Bachelor's degree.
  • 4+ years with a Master's degree.
  • 2+ years with a PhD.
  • Minimum 2 years in AIML engineering, including large-scale model training and deployment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Python, including documentation, testing, and operations tools.
  • Experience with modern software development tools and practices.
  • Deep cloud expertise (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and infrastructure-as-code tools.
  • Hands-on experience with ML frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow, and libraries such as Huggingface or Deepspeed.
  • Experience with agentic AI frameworks (LangGraph, LangChain).
  • Knowledge of ML performance tuning, multi-GPU/TPU training, and distributed training for large models.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and MLOps tools like Kubeflow, Vertex AI, etc.
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and CNCF ecosystem tools.
  • Understanding of HPC systems and performance optimization.
  • Engagement with open-source AI/ML tools and communities.
  • Proficiency with agile tools like Jira and Confluence.
