Job summary

Mapbox is seeking an experienced AI systems engineer to own the design and delivery of multi-component AI systems across multiple teams. You will define how products should work, build evaluation systems, and gate changes on regression results to ensure high quality.

You will balance shipping incremental improvements with rigorous design, build data pipelines, and track external datasets and benchmarks to decide what to adopt or build. On-call rotations and 24/7 availability may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelors Degree in STEM and 5+ years software engineering experience with production ownership of services, pipelines, or SDKs.
• 2+ years shipping LLM-backed features to real users in systems with error budgets and on-call rotations.
• Data engineering depth: SQL and at least one distributed processing framework; pipelines where accuracy matters.
• Fluency with tool calling and agent orchestration, including failure modes like stale context and hallucinations.

Responsibilities

• Define how the products you own should work, build a measurement framework, and gate changes on regression results.
• Run continuous evaluation of APIs, SDKs, data representations, or reference apps from the end-user perspective.
• Own the MVP against a north star design, balancing perfection with shipping usable increments.
• Build data pipelines and tooling: ingestion, conflation, entity resolution, quality checks, batch and streaming jobs.
• Track external datasets and benchmarks, evaluate fit, and decide what to adopt vs build.
