Job summary

Joby Aviation is seeking a highly organized engineer to support our composite materials qualification effort for the eVTOL program, requiring daily onsite presence in Marina, CA. You will lead material qualification projects and coordinate with test labs and suppliers to advance certification activities.

The role requires a BS in mechanical/aerospace/materials, 5+ years in composites, and familiarity with ASTM/SACMA standards; MS preferred.

Qualifications

• B.S. degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, material science or a relevant discipline.
• 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
• In depth understanding and experience with composite parts fabrication and structural bonding.
• Familiarity with ASTM and SACMA test standards.
• Excellent technical writing, computer and presentation skills.
• Understanding of statistical design allowables.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively & communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

• Own material qualification projects that feed the broader qualification program.
• Develop and implement FAA mandated material qualification test plans.
• Author and maintain materials, process, and test specifications and advise on materials and processes for parts/products.
• Develop qualification plans, including process development and material characterization; coordinate with test labs.
• Analyze composite material properties to optimize manufacturing processes.
• Screen and evaluate new materials to optimize throughput; troubleshoot processes and address non-conformances.
• Interface with suppliers on technical issues with materials and processes.
• Partner with stress, manufacturing, quality, and certification teams and mentor engineers.
