Job description

Icarus is at the forefront of aerospace innovation, developing solar-powered stratospheric drones designed to enhance global connectivity and observation. Operating at altitudes 20 times closer to Earth than Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, our drones deliver superior 5G direct-to-device communication and ultra-high-resolution imagery. With the capability to remain airborne for up to a year through autonomous solar-powered operations, Icarus offers continuous, cost-effective solutions that surpass traditional cell towers and satellite systems.

Role Description

As a Senior Aerodynamics Engineer, you will play a critical role in shaping the aerodynamic performance of our stratospheric drones. You will lead the design, analysis, and optimization of aerodynamic systems to achieve efficient and reliable high-altitude operations. This position requires deep technical expertise, creativity, and collaboration to develop innovative solutions for unique aerodynamic challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the design and optimization of aerodynamic shapes, airfoils, and control surfaces to maximize performance, stability, and energy efficiency in stratospheric conditions.
  2. Conduct computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to evaluate aerodynamic performance, identify improvement opportunities, and validate design decisions.
  3. Develop and execute wind tunnel testing campaigns to validate aerodynamic models and optimize designs.
  4. Analyze and enhance the flight dynamics and stability of drones, ensuring robust performance under variable environmental conditions.
  5. Work closely with teams in structures, propulsion, thermal systems, and controls to ensure seamless integration of aerodynamic designs.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline.
  2. Minimum of 5 years of aerodynamic analysis.

Preferred Skills:

  1. Experience with Siemens STAR-CCM+ or other CFD tools.
  2. Experience with UAVs or high-altitude systems.
  3. Experience with wind tunnel testing and data analysis.
  4. Experience with aircraft tools such as OpenVSP and FUN3D.

Compensation and Benefits:

  1. $120,000 to $160,000 salary.
  2. Large equity in the company.
  3. Comprehensive healthcare, dental, and vision plan with HSA.
  4. Dream desk setup, including tools and whatever else you need to be your most productive self.
  5. Daily lunch and unlimited Celsius.
  6. Flexible work arrangements to support work-life balance.
