Job summary

Ricoh USA, Inc. in Boulder, CO is seeking an Advisory Mechanical Engineer to design and build automation and robotic systems for industrial print and manufacturing applications.

This hands-on role collaborates with software, controls, machine vision, and AI/ML engineers and spans the full hardware development cycle—from concept to production. The role requires leading design of tooling, frames, pneumatics, and sheet metal, with close coordination to fabrication shops.

Qualifications

• BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional experience in mechanical design and hands-on work.
• Proven track record delivering complex machines from concept to working hardware as a principal contributor.
• Hands-on experience fabricating, assembling, wiring, and debugging mechanical and electromechanical assemblies in a shop environment.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD and detailed 2D drawings with GD&T.
• Experience with end-of-arm tooling, grippers, pneumatics, motion systems, and sensors.
• Design for assembly and long-term maintainability.
• Strong systems-level thinking for concurrent projects in a fast-moving R&D environment.

Responsibilities

• Develop mechanical and electromechanical designs from concept through production hardware.
• Design end-of-arm tooling, grippers, base frames, guarding, and pneumatic systems for robotic and automated cells.
• Design sheet metal, machined, and fabricated components with DFM in coordination with fabrication shops.
• Scope and deliver bespoke automation builds from requirements to working hardware.
• Specify and integrate motion systems, actuators, sensors, and pneumatics with sizing and cycle-time analysis.
• Design industrial control cabinets, panel layouts, cable routing, and harnessing.
• Produce manufacturing-ready documentation: 3D CAD, electrical schematics, BOMs, and test protocols.
• Coordinate with software and controls engineers for system integration.
