Job Description

Washington D.C. based candidates are preferred but not required. For local candidates, the position requires weekly in-office work (3 days) in our Washington D.C. office under a hybrid working model.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Advisor serves as the primary strategic liaison to LeadingAge's state partners, strengthening collaboration and alignment across the LeadingAge network. Working closely with state executives, the CEO, and the LeadingAge senior team, this individual helps identify state priorities, insights and directions for coordinated action, shaping and advancing initiatives that maximize the value of the national-state partnership.

The Senior Advisor reports to the President and CEO.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
STATE PARTNER ALIGNMENT
  • Serve as the primary liaison with state executives and their board leadership to strengthen the national-state partnership, including identifying opportunities to work collaboratively to address issues, gaps, and duplication.
  • Regularly assess how state and national efforts are working together to deliver member value. Identify where priorities align and where greater coordination, clarity, or action is needed.
  • Support the development of new state partnerships, affiliations, and opportunities for collaboration among and between states.
  • Partner closely with the Membership team to ensure state-specific needs and shared priorities inform membership strategies and approaches, with clear and complementary roles for national and state partners.
MULTI-STATE MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS (MSOs)
  • Serve as the relationship lead for multi-state member organizations, partnering with the President and CEO on executive-level engagement.
  • Maintain a concierge-like approach and a consistent level of engagement across every multi-state organization, recognizing that these organizations operate across state lines and have needs that require coordinated national attention.
  • Bring insights from multi-state member organizations into LeadingAge planning and decision-making, partnering with Membership, policy, education, research and programs, communications, and other teams to inform broader priorities and opportunities.
MEMBER AND STATE INSIGHTS
  • Gather and synthesize member insights from state partners to identify patterns and surface emerging member needs and interests that warrant greater national-state attention or support.
  • Establish mechanisms to capture and share knowledge about different member segments to inform strategic planning efforts and help assess whether LeadingAge is delivering meaningful value.
INTERNAL COLLABORATION AND COORDINATION
  • Ensure that relevant state and member insights reach LeadingAge leadership, with a clear read on what they mean for national priorities and initiatives.
  • Coordinate LeadingAge's engagement with states across teams to reduce duplication and disconnected outreach, clarify roles and accountability, and bring the full strength of the national organization to state partnerships.
  • Collaborate with LeadingAge State Partner Services to identify opportunities to support states with administrative functions, data analysis, and other needs.
ACCOUNTABILITY AND METRICS
  • Establish and monitor annual targets for state partner and multi-state organization engagement, with clear outcomes, roles, and measures of success reflected in work plans and supported through the budget.
  • Regularly report to the CEO on key state and member insights, cross-state trends, emerging issues, and opportunities requiring broader attention or action.
  • Maintain current information on state executive, board/volunteer leadership, and key staff to support effective relationship management and coordination, as well as systems for capturing state and member insights and engagement.
  • Periodically assess the strength and effectiveness of the national-state partnership, including alignment on priorities, clarity of roles, effectiveness of coordination, and the value states see in the partnership.
OTHER
  • Demonstrate LeadingAge's Core Values in all actions: Community, Catalyst, Courage and Stewardship.
  • Foster an inclusive workplace where all are able to meaningfully contribute and thrive.
  • Ability to travel to states and member communities.

  • Experience working with state associations or other federated partners, including facilitating alignment across independent organizations with differing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust with, advise, and influence senior executives and board leaders without direct authority.
  • Experience managing effective senior-level external relationships, including with multi-state provider organizations, association executives, and Board leadership.
  • Strong understanding of association management, governance, and how national and state organizations work together.
