Senior Advisor for Maternal Behavioral Health, Office of Chief Medical Officer

The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) aims to eliminate racial and other inequities that lead to premature mortality. With a focus on history and structural analysis, CHECW works to increase visibility of harm caused by racist and unjust policies, advocating for redress in NYC communities. CHECW addresses inequities across community and healthcare systems in partnership with various organizations, focusing on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial factors, targeting upstream and downstream influences to enhance health and well-being of New Yorkers. The division includes multiple bureaus such as Bronx, Brooklyn, Harlem Neighborhood Health, and others, with the Deputy Commissioner also serving as the Agency's Chief Equity Officer.

The Office of the Chief Medical Officer, within CHECW, seeks a Senior Advisor for Maternal Behavioral Health. Reporting to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, this role will serve as the NYC Health Department's lead strategist for maternal behavioral health, identifying needs, developing strategies, and collaborating across departments and with external partners to improve maternal health outcomes.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Serve as the lead strategist and coordinator for maternal behavioral health.
  2. Highlight maternal behavioral health as a priority for HealthyNYC goals.
  3. Collaborate with division leads to assess current needs and programs.
  4. Facilitate inter-divisional communication and leverage existing workgroups.
  5. Build relationships with mental health subject matter experts.
  6. Review behavioral health data regularly to identify opportunities for program alignment.
  7. Implement activities based on NYC Maternal Mortality Review recommendations, including workforce development, provider education, naloxone distribution, and harm reduction materials.
  8. Engage with external partners like NYC Health and Hospitals, ACS, DHS, and academic institutions.
  9. Coordinate with internal teams such as External Affairs and Data Science.
Preferred Skills:
  • Master's in public health, policy, social work, or related field.
  • Certification in maternal child health.
  • Expertise in maternal and behavioral health.
  • Experience in coalition building, program development, and implementation.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of evaluation methods.
  • Ability to build and maintain partnerships.
  • Commitment to public health anti-racism, social justice, and equity.
