Job summary

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York is seeking a Senior Accountant to support core accounting operations, ensure GAAP compliance, and assist with monthly and year-end close, audits, and financial reporting. The role partners with Budget, Grants, Payroll, Treasury and operations to improve processes and reporting.

The position requires a Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of nonprofit accounting experience, with opportunities to work on Workday ERP initiatives and regulatory filings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required.
• Three or more years of accounting experience, preferably managing or auditing non-profit organizations.

Responsibilities

• Financial Reporting & Close Management: Support monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements, prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations and schedules, participate in month-end and year-end close processes, and analyze variances to improve reporting accuracy.
• Audit Coordination & Compliance: Coordinate preparation for the annual financial statement audit and Uniform Guidance audit, prepare schedules and documentation for auditors and regulators, ensure GAAP and federal grant requirements are met.
• Grant Accounting Support: Support post-award grant accounting activities with Grants office, review grant expenditures for allowability, reconcile to the general ledger, and assist with SEFA and sponsor reports.
• Institutional & Technical Accounting: Prepare institutional regulatory filings (Form 990), assist with indirect cost proposals and fringe rate calculations, document technical accounting issues and implement new accounting standards.
• Systems & Processes Improvement: Support ERP initiatives (Workday) and system upgrades, streamline close activities, strengthen internal controls, and improve reporting workflows.
