Job summary

Peters Heating and Air Conditioning, a family-owned HVAC service provider, seeks a Senior Accountant to strengthen the accounting team across multiple IL locations. The role focuses on robust financial processes, reporting, and continuity with leadership and the Fractional CFO team.

The successful candidate will own month-end close, balance sheet reconciliations, job costing, payroll support, and internal controls, delivering accurate, timely insights to drive growth.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of accounting experience in HVAC, mechanical, or construction settings.
• Sage Intacct experience strongly preferred or advanced construction ERP system.
• Strong understanding of accounting principles and construction accounting.
• Hands-on experience with reconciliations and balance sheets.
• Experience with payroll processing, certified payroll, and prevailing wage.
• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting; proficient Excel skills.
• Ability to work with executives, operations leaders, and admin teams.

Peters also offers sheet metal fabrication, metal roofing, seamless gutters, fireplaces, and preventative maintenance service agreements. The Senior Accountant will play an important role in strengthening the accounting department, improving financial processes and reporting, and providing accounting support and continuity across the organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serve as the Controller's primary support resource.
• Perform monthly account and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Assist with month-end and year-end close activities and financial reporting.
• Support job costing and accounting process improvements.
• Manage small accounting and process-improvement projects assigned by the Controller or Fractional CFO.
• Support and guide a large team of administrative staff responsible for entering accounting transactions.
• Review accounting workflows and help improve accuracy, consistency, documentation, and efficiency.
• Assist with Sage Intacct administration, reporting, and process optimization.
• Provide backup payroll support, including certified payroll and prevailing wage reporting.
• Support audits, compliance requirements, and internal controls.
• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding payroll, employee information, and company financial data.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 5+ years of accounting experience within HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, construction, or another specialty contracting environment.
• Sage Intacct experience highly preferred or advanced construction ERP system
• Strong understanding of accounting principles and construction accounting.
• Hands-on experience with account reconciliations and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Experience job costing.
• Experience with payroll processing, certified payroll, and prevailing wage requirements.
• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
• Strong Microsoft Excel, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with executives, operations leaders, accounting personnel, and administrative teams.

• Taking ownership of delegated accounting functions and projects.
• Complete assigned balance sheet reconciliations accurately and on time each month.
• Support a timely, disciplined month-end close and improve reporting reliability.

• Successfully lead assigned accounting and process-improvement projects.
