Job Location: Hybrid: In office 2+ days per week (North Riverside, Illinois)

Summary Statement of Principal Functions

Responsible for maintaining the financial records of Community Nutrition Network and Senior Services Association (DBA Meals on Wheels for Northern Illinois), or “MOWFNI” (the Organization). Supports the Controller with budget preparation, payroll, grant and financial reporting. Ensuring compliance with the Federal Uniform Guidance, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), AICPA standards and relevant state accounting society guidelines.

Collaborate with the Development and Communications and Operations departments to reconcile revenue from gifts and create and revise program budgets.

Actively collaborate with educating the organization’s staff on accounting issues.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Assist in preparing annual agency-wide budgets, variance analysis
  • Prepare annual cost allocation plans
  • Maintain compliance with internal policies and grant requirements for budgeting, spending, and other grant restrictions
  • Prepare budgets for grant proposals and other requests for funding. Monitor grant spenddown, prepare fiscal reports, and provide budget-to-actual reports on grants to various stakeholders
  • Coordinate and process bi-weekly payroll with accuracy and efficiency
  • Provide day-to-day management of the organization’s accounting functions. Verify entries for proper classification and reconcile all balance sheet accounts prior to period close
  • Maintain the accounting system and authorize changes to the account structure
  • Approve ACH payments exceeding certain thresholds
  • Investigate and recommend improvements to internal controls
  • Collaborate with Development to reconcile financial and fundraising data.
  • Collaborate with Operations to create and revise program budgets based on performance and provide metrics tracking
  • Perform periodic internal accounting audits. Assist with gathering data for various grant audits, as well as the annual Financial Statement audits and Form 990 filings
  • Monitor bank accounts and cash resources
  • Support administration of 403B plan, insurance benefits, and pre-tax plans
  • Maintain fixed asset ledger and depreciation schedules
  • Monitor systems for compliance with fiscal, internal requirements and federal regulation
  • Participate in meetings and fiscal discussions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Required
  • 3-5+ years of accounting experience
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting
  • Knowledge of GAAP and Federal Uniform Guidance
  • Experience with grant reporting, fund accounting, or restricted funds
  • Ability to commute to North Riverside, IL 60546
  • Ability to prepare month-end close, reconciliations and financial reports.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting Required
  • CPA or Masters Preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience
