Job summary

John Hancock Life Insurance Company (U.S.A.) is seeking a Senior Accountant to support LTC and Annuities operations in the US FSSC area. You will be responsible for preparing financial close processes, including journal entries, detailed calculations, and financial analyses.

Responsibilities include IFRS17/OSFI/NAIC accounting, accuracy across multiple bases, annual reporting contributions, and developing process documentation.

Qualifications

• University degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent work experience.
• CPA designation is an asset.
• Typically 4+ years of experience.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Detail-oriented, well-organized with excellent analytical skills.
• Self-starter and team player with initiative and strong work ethic.
• Ability to multi-task and manage priorities in a demanding environment.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, Alteryx and Power BI.

Responsibilities

• Ensure complete, accurate and timely accounting across multiple bases including complex transactions and systems; review analyses, footnotes and financial statements.
• Contribute to annual reporting including audited financial statements and schedules; streamline submissions and processes.
• Develop understanding of processes and products; maintain process documentation and training materials.
• Champion knowledge-building and usage of automated systems supporting monthly and quarterly accounting.
• Support SOX/MAR for assigned processes and related documentation.
• Manage income statement testing, coordinate audit requests and analyze improvement opportunities.
• Prepare and reconcile balance sheet accounts in support of Account Ownership and QAP testing.

The Senior Accountant supports LTC and Annuities operations and projects within the US FSSC area. You will be responsible for preparing financial close processes, including journal entry preparation, detailed calculations and financial analyses.

Position Responsibilities

• Perform accounting and control activities for IFRS17, OSFI and NAIC results and develop and implement related process improvements
• Ensure complete, accurate and timely accounting activities across multiple accounting bases including complex accounting transactions, complex accounting systems, review of various analyses, footnotes, and financial statements
• Responsible for producing contributions to annual reporting including audited financial statements and annual statement schedules, including streamlining submissions and underlying processes
• Develop a strong understanding of processes and products, creating and maintaining process documentation and training materials as necessary
• Champion knowledge-building and usage of multiple automated systems which support the monthly and quarterly accounting processes
• Support SOX/MAR for assigned processes and related documentation
• Manage income statement testing, including coordination of audit requests, and analyze opportunities for improvement
• Prepare and reconcile several balance sheet accounts in support of Account Ownership and QAP testing

Required Qualifications

• University Degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent work experience
• CPA designation an asset
• Typically, 4 or more years of experience
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Detail-oriented, well-organized, and excellent analytical skills
• Self-starter and team player with a high level of initiative, strong work ethic and the ability to gather, synthesize, organize and report information
• Ability to multi-task and manage priorities in a demanding and deadline-oriented environment
• Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office applications, Alteryx, and Power BI
• Demonstrates a working knowledge of accounting rules, regulatory rules and/or business processes as it pertains to the accountant's sphere of responsibility (e.g., a set of regulatory filings or account reconciliations)
• Demonstrates emerging to solid proficiency in own discipline; still acquiring higher-level knowledge and skills.
• Demonstrates emerging ability to draft managerial reporting narratives.

Compensation & Benefits

Referenced Salary Location Boston, Massachusetts Working Arrangement Hybrid Salary range is expected to be between $73,350.00 USD - $122,250.00 USD Employees also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn incentive compensation tied to business and individual performance. The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
