- Provides academic advising for students pursuing or consideringthe minor in Pre-Professional Clinical Health and students withmajors in the College who are considering professional programs inthe health sciences.
- Creates a welcoming and inclusive environment for allstudents.
- Meets with students individually or in groups to guide them inpursuing a course of study based on their developmental needs andtheir academic and career goals.
- Teaches students to explore their intellectual interests andassess their abilities. Teaches students to research and understandthe requirements of their intended major, minor and certificateprograms, as well as professional programs of interest.
- Guides students in planning a personalized course of studybased on their academic and career objectives, with an emphasis ontimely completion of course prerequisites for professional degreeprograms in the health sciences.
- Makes effective use of student information systems to monitorstudent academic progress and provide ongoing support and guidancefor students in the building and refinement of their personalacademic plans. Help students identify and engage with experientiallearning and co-curricular opportunities that support theiracademic and career goals.
- Keeps accurate records of student advising contacts andmaintain the confidentiality of student records. Remains current oncurricular requirements, policies, and procedures. Maintainscurrent knowledge of advising and student development theorythrough ongoing professional development. Assume other advisingresponsibilities as assigned by the College's Advising LeadershipTeam.
- Serves as the point person for the Pre-Professional ClinicalHealth minor and primary liaison with the Health Professions andPrelaw Advising Office and other advising units.
- Provides group advising for prospective students andinformation sessions for campus partners. Directs students toappropriate campus resources such as career services, tutoring, andother academic support services.
- Supports students in pursuit of undergraduate research,internship, and study abroad opportunities. Represents thePre-Professional Clinical Health minor and the College oncommittees and working groups and at recruiting functions. Assistsin the development of written materials.
- Collaborates with the Health Professions and Prelaw AdvisingOffice to maintain current knowledge of prerequisites forprofessional programs in health fields and applicationrequirements. Researches, recommends, or develops best practicesfor health professions advising. Provides training and support forother advisors as appropriate.
General Responsibilities
- Provides academic counseling for students pursuing orconsidering majors, minors, or certificates. Guides students inplanning their course of study in concert with the departments'curricular requirements; explains curriculum requirements andschool and campus policies.
- Meets with students in groups and 1-on-1 to guide students inacademic programs that will meet their educational needs and therequirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.Assesses student satisfaction and engagement with advising andrecommends improvements in practice.
- Assists students in making informed decisions about a choice ofmajor and potential career or graduate school direction. Helpsstudents to assess their interests, values, and academic skills andto understand these in relation to major choice and potentialfuture career/graduate school options.
- Teaches students how to navigate university systems, academicprocesses, and policies. Empowers student accountability inacademic decisions about courses, career direction, and long-termplans. Provides guidance on avenues for increased involvement as anIU student and in the IU community.
- Refers students to appropriate campus resources, such asacademic support resources, placement programs, internship andoverseas study opportunities, etc.
- Tracks and monitors students' academic progress, reviews andmaintains confidential student records to ensure that students meetrequirements and to document advising discussions, and communicatesthis information in a timely manner to students and to appropriateacademic offices when necessary.
- Represents the advising function as a presenter at campusmeetings and recruiting functions. Assists in developing writtenadvising materials for use in student events. Assesses theeffectiveness of messaging and timing of communications related toadvising topics and technologies.
- Researches, recommends, or creates best practices for unit orcampus initiatives, projects, processes, or programs and regularlyprovides guidance to other Academic Advisors.
- Roles above the Core career level may include expanded dutiesand leadership and/or higher expectations of performance in linewith the campus advising ecosystem.
QualificationsCombinations of related education and experience may beconsidered. Education beyond the minimum required may besubstituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimumrequired may be substituted for education.EDUCATION
Required- Master's degree in related field. Master's degree in a liberalarts field preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required- 5 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, orrelated field.
- Experience in a student-focused, higher education environmentis highly desired.

Working Conditions / DemandsThis role requires the ability to effectively communicate and tooperate a computer and other standard office productivityequipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periodsof time moving around an office environment and the campus. Theperson in this role must be able to perform the essential functionswith or without an accommodation.
