Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree and four years' related experience required.
  • One year directly related to providing college-level advising.
  • Masters degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., education, counseling, social and behavioral sciences).
  • Understanding of the needs and challenges facing international students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience advising students in special programs and/or with a cohort model.
  • Experience developing student- and learning-centered programming to support student success.
  • Familiarity with student development theory and academic advising principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, within the department and with faculty and other administrators.
  • Strong organizational, project management, communication (written and oral), and facilitation skills.
  • Strong data management and computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Suite, and an aptitude to learn new systems as needed.
  • Experience using CUNYfirst (PeopleSoft), a plus.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive academic advising and holistic support to F-1 international students to promote academic success, retention, persistence, and timely degree completion.
  • Advise students on academic requirements, degree planning, major selection, transfer pathways, career exploration, and the relationship between academic and professional goals.
  • Interpret and communicate institutional policies, academic regulations, immigration-related requirements, and college procedures affecting international students.
  • Monitor student progress using DegreeWorks, CUNYfirst, EAB Navigate, and other student success technologies to proactively identify and assist students experiencing academic or personal challenges.
  • Develop individualized success plans and make referrals to campus resources, including tutoring, accessibility, career services, and wellness programs, among others.
  • Assist with orientations, workshops, outreach campaigns, and educational programming focused on student success, academic planning, and F-1 compliance.
  • Collaborate with faculty, academic departments, Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, and other campus partners to ensure coordinated support for international students.
  • Serve on college committees, task forces, and advising initiatives; contribute to the development and implementation of advising policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise peer advisors, student employees, and/or college assistants assigned to the department.
  • Provide guidance and tailored support while engaging a cohort of newly admitted students throughout their onboarding process and completion of required tasks.
