Semiconductor TIG Welder - Tool Install / Fusion Welding
Position Summary
The Semiconductor TIG Welder performs high-purity manual GTAW/TIG fusion welding on stainless-steel process piping used in semiconductor tool-install applications. This is not conventional filler-wire pipe welding. The pipe is plain end, the joint is prepared and aligned to the required standard, and the pipe ends are fused together without adding filler wire. Material condition and finished appearance are critical parts of acceptance.
Required Skills & Field Demonstration
- No Filler Wire - Perform autogenous TIG fusion welding with NO filler wire added to the weld. The properly prepared pipe ends are fused together.
- Plain-End Pipe - Work with plain-end stainless-steel pipe/tube. No bevel is used unless specifically required by an approved project procedure.
- Pipe Preparation - Correctly measure, cut, face, square, clean, and prepare pipe ends before fit-up and welding.
- No Grinding - Grinding is not permitted on the pipe for weld preparation or cosmetic repair. Use only approved cutting, facing, and cleaning methods.
- No Scratches or Surface Damage - Protect the pipe/tube from unacceptable scratches, gouges, grinding marks, arc strikes, tool marks, or other surface damage during handling, preparation, fit-up, and welding.
- No Unacceptable High-Low - Achieve proper fit-up and alignment with no unacceptable high-low or mismatch between mating pipe ends.
- Alignment & Support - Verify the pipe is properly aligned, supported, and secured before initiating the weld so movement does not create misalignment during welding.
- TIG Equipment Setup - Demonstrate proper machine setup, amperage control, torch setup, tungsten selection/preparation, gas flow, grounding, and purge setup.
- Argon Purge - Establish and maintain proper internal argon purge and external shielding gas throughout the fusion welding process. Understand that inadequate purge can create oxidation, contamination, discoloration, or an unacceptable weld.
- No Unacceptable Dark Color - Produce welds without unacceptable dark discoloration, heavy oxidation, sugaring, or heat tint outside the approved project acceptance criteria.
- Fusion Weld Quality - Produce a clean, consistent 360-degree fusion weld with proper penetration and a uniform weld profile.
- Welding Technique - Maintain proper torch angle, arc length, travel speed, heat input, and consistency throughout the complete circumference of the weld.
- Tungsten Control - Maintain clean tungsten and immediately address tungsten contamination or accidental contact with the pipe/weld.
- Defect Recognition - Recognize unacceptable conditions including high-low, lack of fusion, incomplete or excessive penetration, concavity, undercut, porosity, oxidation, contamination, irregular weld profile, arc strikes, and excessive discoloration.
- No Unauthorized Cosmetic Repair - Do not hide, blend, grind, polish, or otherwise cosmetically repair an unacceptable weld unless specifically directed under an approved repair procedure.
- High-Purity Cleanliness - Maintain clean pipe, fittings, welding equipment, purge equipment, tools, gloves, and work areas in accordance with semiconductor high-purity requirements.
- Open-End Protection - Protect all exposed and open pipe ends from contamination throughout fabrication and installation.
- Stop Work / Notify QC - Stop work and notify the Foreman and/or Quality Control when fit-up, material condition, cleanliness, alignment, purge, or weld quality does not meet project requirements.
- Material Condition Is Part of Quality - Understand that the condition and appearance of the installed material are part of the quality of the finished semiconductor installation, not just the weld itself.
- Overall Qualification - Independently prepare, fit, purge, fusion weld, and inspect the work at a skill level consistent with a qualified Semiconductor Tool-Install TIG Welder.
TIG Field Qualification Expectation
A candidate hired as a qualified Semiconductor Tool-Install TIG Welder should be able to independently demonstrate material handling, cutting/facing, plain-end fit-up, alignment, purge setup, machine/torch setup, autogenous fusion welding without filler wire, and recognition of unacceptable weld or material conditions. The candidate should understand that grinding, unacceptable scratches, unacceptable high-low, contamination, and unacceptable dark discoloration can result in rejection of the installation.
- Common Semiconductor Safety & Quality Expectations
- Follow all company, client, site-specific, cleanroom, PPE, and semiconductor safety requirements.
- Maintain strict material and weld cleanliness and protect high-purity piping/tubing from contamination.
- Follow approved welding procedures, project specifications, drawings, and quality requirements. Do not make unauthorized changes to approved welding processes or parameters.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, material discrepancies, weld defects, contamination concerns, or conditions that could affect installation integrity.
- Accurately complete required welding, quality-control, and traceability documentation.
- Maintain welding machines, purge equipment, tools, gas systems, and work areas in safe operating condition.
- Perform the work with Safety first, Quality second, and Productivity third.
Physical / Work Requirements
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined or elevated areas as required.
- Ability to handle welding equipment, tubing, pipe, and related materials.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including overtime, weekends, or shutdown work when required.
- Commitment to site safety, contamination control, and quality procedures.
