Multilingual Learner Education Department/Vassal Lane Upper School

Overview of Cambridge Public Schools:

The Role:

The SEI Math teacher will teach math to English Learners in grades 6-8 in the Sheltered English Immersion Program at the Vassal Lane Upper School using the Math Department Curriculum, the Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks and appropriate English language development pedagogy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan grade-level math lessons that are appropriately scaffolded for English language learners.
  • Modify math department curriculumto fit the academic, linguistic, and literacy needs of EL/SLIFE students.
  • Work cooperatively with personnel from the MLE Department, Math Department, and Vassal Lane Upper School staff.
  • Provide culturally responsive instruction for EL students.
  • Attend school-based and department professional learning opportunities
  • Keep accurate grades and communicate with parents on a regular basis throughout the year.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Director of Multilingual Learner Education

Your Skill Set:

As the incoming SEI Math Teacher, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Massachusetts Educator License in Math 5-8 and SEI Endorsement required; additional ESL 5-12 license preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a concentration in mathematics.
  • One or more years’ experience working with diverse student populations in grades 6-12 in an urban, multicultural setting preferred.
  • Proficiency in English and fluency in a language other than English (Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Amharic, or Arabic) preferred.
