Responsibilities

Job Description

General Purpose of Job: Responsible for providing professional nursing services and a variety of intravenous chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy infusions to the patients in the infusion center and the hematology oncology clinic. Responsible for coordinating the operational activities in the infusion center and the hematology oncology clinic. This includes, but is not limited to systems, patient flow, patient care, and functions required to maintain an effective service-oriented department. Collaborates with department providers in clinic and infusion setting on a regular basis. Collaborates with various departments within the organization including but not limited to the pharmacy, lab, blood bank, and imaging/diagnostic testing departments. The registered nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates individual patient care in conjunction with and under the supervision of the ordering provider according to policies, procedures, and standards of care.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide direct patient care under established protocols and under the supervision and direction of a provider.
  • Assist provider(s) during procedures. Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures per protocol.
  • Initiate appropriate nursing care and assist with medical care.
  • Administer chemotherapy/immunotherapy via appropriate routes.
  • Obtain venous access via peripheral vein and/or implanted port.
  • Provide patient and family with education related to oncology procedures, surgeries, chemotherapy treatment, lab and diagnostic procedures, and symptom management.
  • Document patient care according to policy and protocol.
  • Maintain appropriate and accurate written record of patient interactions, including but not limited to telephone messages, nursing progress notes, and in-basket messages.
  • Schedule and/or coordinate appropriate lab/diagnostic procedures.
  • Process, coordinate, and schedule incoming infusion referrals.
  • Process, coordinate, and schedule chemotherapy appointments under the supervision and direction of a provider.
  • Share relevant information concerning the patient's condition with physician, manager, and other medical staff, as appropriate and indicated to ensure continuity of care.
  • Coordinate care with the individual patient, family, and other health care providers as necessary.
  • Communicate with providers and provide prompt follow-up on abnormal laboratory and diagnostic test results.
  • Collaborate with the pharmacy regarding medication dose, route, frequency, and duration found within patient treatment plans and therapy plans.
  • Continuously monitor and verify lab results and treatment plans according to established protocols.
  • Monitor, assess, plan, implement, and evaluate oral chemotherapy protocols under the supervision and direction of a provider.
  • Maintain equipment, supplies, and environmental safety.
  • Manage and maintain assigned infusion patients and assume care of urgently scheduled add on patients.
  • Maintain professional and practice standards by participating in in-services, staff meetings, and educational opportunities including committee involvement.
  • Assist in developing and implementing quality control and practice policies.
  • Assist with special projects as required by the department.
  • Work closely with leaders to assess departmental needs and implement workflow improvement projects.
  • Rotate through weekend on call assignment as assigned by leader.
  • Preform other duties as assigned by leader.
Job Requirements
  • General Requirements
    • Current State of Michigan licensure as a registered nurse.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 60 days of hire.
    • Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy provider card through ONS within 60 days of hire.
    • Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) OR must maintain 12 oncology specific CEU’s per year.
  • Work Experience
    • Minimum of 2 years of RN experience in an acute care or outpatient setting.
    • Minimum of 2 years of RN experience in outpatient physician clinic.
    • Previous outpatient ambulatory experience preferred.
    • Previous Oncology/Hematology clinic experience preferred.
  • Education
    • Associate degree from an accredited school of nursing.
    • Maintains competency by completing continuing education credits within each two-year period, corresponding with licensure renewal.
    • Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.

    • Clinical knowledge and independent judgement necessary to implement and direct individualized and comprehensive patient care.
    • Clinical knowledge and analytical abilities necessary to formulate effective nursing care plans related to the field of Hematology/Oncology and infusion.

    • Interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately communicate, verbally and in writing, with patients, families, providers, and other organizational team members.
    • Demonstrates positive team attitude and has interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately communicate with patients, their families, providers, and other team members.
    • Develops plan of care that includes age-specific needs, physical and safety needs, psychological needs, and educational needs.
    • Possesses the leadership skills needed to take charge of a situation when necessary and takes the initiative and independence to follow through.
    • Requires visual and auditory acuity necessary to monitor a patient's condition and to operate office equipment.
