Job summary

SUNY Westchester Community College’s Criminal Justice Department is offering a paid Security Services Internship at the Valhalla campus. Pay: Westchester County Minimum Wage for up to 120 hours


Description

SUNY Westchester Community College’s Criminal Justice Department is seeking and enthusiastic and diligent students to intern with our campus Security Department. This paid internship is designed to provide students with insight in providing security and security-related services to the campus community and is a unique opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in campus safety operations while learning from professionals in the field. Interns will support a variety of positions, including Customer Service Representative, Control Center Operator, and Campus Security Officers.


Key Responsibilities

  • Observing and assisting with patrol operations
  • Participating in safety audits and emergency drills
  • Learning about dispatch and communication protocols
  • Assisting with campus outreach and incident prevention
  • Contributing to report writing and incident documentation

Weekly Workflow (8 hours per week) and subject to change

  • Approximately 2-3 hours at main security desk providing assistance
  • Approximately 2-3 hours at call control center
  • Approximately 3 hours on campus patrol and/or site visits

In addition, the intern will have the opportunity to tour various county law enforcement facilities and learn the process of becoming a police officer and licensed security guard in New York State.


Qualifications and Requirements

  • Currently enrolled at SUNY Westchester with a minimum of 24 credits
  • Current GPA 2.7 or higher
  • Approval of Criminal Justice Curriculum Chair
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and take direction
  • Ability to maintain professional composure in stressful situations
  • Frequent sitting, but also occasional lifting up to 25 pounds
  • Depending on assignment, may be exposed to inclement weather
  • Background check will be conducted

This internship provides substantive service learning for each of the Criminal Justice AAS outcomes:


  • PLO1: Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively and efficiently at the entry‑level of employment within law enforcement.
  • PLO2: Demonstrate skills that will allow independent learning of new and emerging theories and technologies and their application to the law enforcement field of Criminal Justice
  • PLO3: Demonstrate an understanding of the applicable terminology, case law, procedural law, and policies in regard to law enforcement and their roles in the criminal justice field.
  • PLO4: Demonstrate appropriate quantitative and qualitative skills which include data organization, analysis, and interpretation for the purpose of analyzing and solving problems in the criminal justice field
  • PLO5: Demonstrate the ability to recognize computer and forensic technology and the use of such for law enforcement purposes.
  • PLO6: Demonstrate an understanding of the three components of the criminal justice system and the process by which they work together.
  • PLO7: Demonstrate an understanding of report writing and showcase writing techniques used in the field of criminal justice and academia.
