Job summary

Position Title: Security Professional

Department: Facilities & Custodial

Reports to: Security Supervisor

FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Security Professional is responsible for ensuring the security of staff, guests, and facilities at Pacific Science Center. The Security Professional serves as a visible deterrent to crime, identifies suspicious activities, and addresses criminal acts or guest policy infractions which may be a threat to the property, guests, or employees on site.

This position will work a regular schedule that requires weekend and evening work. 6:30am-12am/swing shift availability required. There is a need for flexibility in scheduling at times to ensure coverage that meets operational needs.

  • Perform lock-ups at exhibit closing time and later as other events conclude
  • Perform frequent interior and exterior roves with a critical eye for safety and security situations
  • Actively monitor security cameras to maintain a full view of premises
  • Respond rapidly and appropriately to emergencies
  • Proactively identify and respond to incidents, hazards, and unauthorized activity in the prescribed manner
  • Provide exemplary customer service when determining and responding to the needs of guests and staff
  • Assist guests in wayfinding, including escorting guests to and from locations
  • Actively monitor and respond to requests for support on radio calls
  • Inventory and maintain security equipment such as radios
  • Consistently wear and maintain a clean and tidy uniform (provided)
  • Maintain accurate security records through written documentation
  • Adhere to established procedures and protocols
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge or training in the following areas:
    • Basic security principles
    • The legal powers and limitations of security officers
    • Emergency response training
    • Safety and accident prevention
    • Report writing
  • Awareness of personal bias and demonstrated commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access
  • Security and emergency response protocols
  • Ability to use cameras and associated equipment and software
  • Project professionalism and confidence
  • Ability to handle both common and crisis situations calmly and efficiently
  • Ability to provide exemplary customer service and employ effective de‑escalation techniques
  • Demonstrated commitment to learning and continuously improving; incorporating feedback in a timely manner
  • Effective written and oral communication and interpersonal skills with ability to collaborate with all levels of personnel and the general public in a professional and effective manner
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Suite, and communication platforms such as email and SharePoint
  • Use initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Current first aid and CPR training and certifications (or within six months of hire)
  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English.

Preferred

  • Prior security and law enforcement experience
  • Proficiency in a second language such as but not limited to Spanish, Somali, Mandarin, ASL, and/or Vietnamese is a highly preferred skill.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The workplace environment will include outdoors, on the exhibit floor, employee-only areas, and in an office environment. Physical demands of the position could include moving supplies and objects up to 40 lbs; must be able to communicate verbally and in writing, utilizing radios, telephone, and virtual platforms to give and receive information. Position duties will require an individual to maneuver through crowded areas; manipulate and safely use objects, tools or controls; reach to retrieve supplies and objects; utilize stairs; respond quickly to sounds in the area. The noise level in the shared office space varies from low to moderate, sometimes utilizing a computer workstation.

Compensation

Pay is based on several factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience.
