Job summary

Mall of America is seeking a Security Officer to ensure guest safety, protect property, and provide exceptional service across the shopping campus. You will patrol by foot or vehicle, respond to emergencies, assist guests, and enforce mall policies with professionalism.

Requirements include a high school diploma, 18+ years old, valid driver's license, CPR/First Aid training preferred, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. The role offers flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • CPR and First Aid training preferred and able to perform CPR on all body types.
  • Strong listening and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Rigorous 120 hour in-house physical and skills training program.
  • Officers must withstand a full five-second exposure to a CEW and exposure to pepper spray.
  • Able to remain calm in stressful situations utilizing rational thinking and decision making skills.
  • Maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to perform duties effectively.
  • Basic knowledge of federal, state, and local law preferred.
  • Training as a first responder, EMT, or Paramedic preferred.
  • Military or law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Prior security experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol Mall of America common and restricted areas.
  • Deter unwanted behavior by maintaining a highly visible patrol presence.
  • Assist guests with questions including directions and locating lost people or vehicles.
  • Provide excellent guest service and maintain a professional, friendly manner.
  • Respond to emergency calls including medical emergencies, combative or disorderly guests, intoxicated persons, and motor vehicle accidents.
  • Arrest disorderly or combative guests.
  • Maintain confidentiality per MOA policy.
  • Adapt to varying situations with emphasis on safety of property, staff, and guests.
  • Write detailed incident, accident or personal injury reports.
  • May conduct crowd control, VIP protection, or monitoring access at events.
  • Utilize radio communications with Dispatch and Supervisors.
  • Request Police, Fire, and EMS as necessary.
  • Conduct periodic safety and fire equipment inspections.
  • Issue parking violations and direct traffic as assigned.
  • Deescalate upset guests.
  • Assist tenants with loss prevention and safety awareness.
  • Monitor safety practices among staff and tenants and report hazards.

Job description

PURPOSE: To ensure guests, tenants, and team members at Mall of America have a positive experience by providing unparalleled service related to emergency response, protection of life and property, loss prevention, and guest service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Patrol Mall of America common and restricted areas by foot or vehicle as assigned.
  • Deter unwanted behavior by maintaining a highly visible patrol presence.
  • Assist guests with questions including giving directions and locating lost people or vehicles.
  • Provide excellent guest service and maintain a professional, friendly manner in challenging situations.
  • Appropriately respond to emergency calls including medical emergencies, combative or disorderly guests, intoxicated persons, addressing persons committing illegal acts, and motor vehicle accidents.
  • Arrest disorderly or combative guests.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality, following MOA policy for sharing information when needed.
  • Adapt and respond to varying situations and circumstances, with an emphasis on safety of Mall property, team members, and guests.
  • Write detailed and accurate reports as required, including incident, accident or personal injury reports.
  • May be assigned to special events, conducting crowd control, VIP protection, or stationary posts monitoring access to restricted areas.
  • Utilize radio for clear and detailed communication with Dispatch, Supervisors, and other relevant staff.
  • Request Police, Fire, and EMS services as necessary.
  • Conduct periodic safety and fire equipment inspections.
  • Issue parking violation tickets, conduct traffic direction as assigned.
  • Deescalate situations when faced with upset guests.
  • Assist tenants with loss prevention, safety awareness, and disorderly guest incidents as directed.
  • Monitor safety awareness practices among Mall staff and tenants and promptly identify and report any hazardous conditions according to procedure.
  • Regularly carry equipment including handcuffs, pepper spray, tactical baton, and a conducted electrical weapon (CEW).
  • Work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, high volume days, mandatory overtime, and short notice special events.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the officer will frequently be required to speak and listen to guests to understand their needs and communicate a solution. Officer must possess a level of hearing that will continuously allow them to be aware of their surroundings and recognize when a guest needs their attention. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Officers are required to be able to tolerate multiple sensory stimuli at once while performing their duties. These stimuli may include: loud auditory/noise, smells/olfactory, bright lights, colors, motion, and other visual and tactile stimuli.
