Job Description

The Security Officer (SO) plays a vital role in the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) community, focusing on the detection, deterrence, and prevention of threats and hazards to maintain a safe and supportive work environment. This position resides within the Laboratory Protection (LP) group at NLR. As a Security Officer - Specialist II, you will apply industry experience of security protocols and procedures to independently perform routine operational responsibilities. We are looking to hire SO II’s for the Night Shift (Shift 1). For insight of what it would be like to be a part of the Laboratory Protection team, To set our new team members up for success, this position includes a six-month probationary period. This is a collaborative time to ensure successful long-term fit, providing dedicated support and training as you become acquainted with your role and our organization.


Salary: Qualified and successful candidates will receive a job offer with an annual salary between $51k-64k.


Shift Schedule And Pay Differential

Shift 1: 11 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. (additional12% shift pay differential)


Shift assignment and days off are determined based on team needs. This position is eligible for overtime.

  • Patrol Operations: Conduct patrols in a thorough, reliable, and operationally sound manner.

  • Entry Control: Perform entry control duties accurately, consistently, and professionally.

  • Alarm Response: Respond to routine alarms in a safe, timely, and reliable manner.

  • Incident Response and Command: Independently establish and manage incident command for routine incidents with good judgment. Respond to routine incidents safely, reliably, and operationally sound manner.

  • CMS Operations: Begin training in Central Monitoring Station (CMS) operations and develop foundational knowledge of CMS systems and procedures.

  • Customer Service: Provide professional, respectful, and effective customer service during routine interactions.

  • Radio Communications: Use radio communications clearly, professionally, and effectively during routine operations.

  • Report Writing: Independently produce clear, accurate, and organized incident reports with minimal corrections.

  • SEB Operations: Begin training in visitor processing and develop foundational knowledge of visitor requirements and procedures.


Additional Responsibilities


  • Maintain First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

  • Support overall Laboratory Protection mission objectives through additional duties as assigned.


Employment in this position is contingent upon successful completion:



  • Medical evaluation and behavioral health screening, as required by 10 CFR Part 1046.

  • A pre-employment background investigation, which may include:

  • Obtaining credentials in accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12, which requires additional National Agency Checks with Indices background investigation and fingerprinting.

  • Proof of a valid and current motor vehicle operator’s license.


Basic Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and 1 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate’s Degree or certification program of comparable scope or equivalent relevant education/experience. Considerable knowledge of the job. Substantial understanding of general aspects of the job with a broad understanding of the detailed aspects of the job. Intermediate skills in applicable software packages and office equipment. Basic project administration skills. Ability to prioritize work. Proficient written and verbal communication skills. Very good team and interpersonal skills.


Government Access Controlled Systems – US Citizenship


Eligibility requirements: This position will require access to sensitive information, Government facilities, and/or Government information systems restricted to individuals with US citizenship. Only applicants that are US Citizens at the time of application will be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications

A minimum of one year of experience in security, safety, emergency response or related field.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Specialist II / Annual Salary Range: $44,500 - $71,200


NLR takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
