CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS

Positions allocated to this class are non-peace officer positions assigned to provide security in and around County facilities and properties of public agencies contracting Sheriff Department security services. Incumbents must distinguish between circumstances in which counseling, admonition, and explanation will serve to maintain a peaceful environment or where the intervention of law enforcement personnel is necessary.

• Works a fixed post or tours the inner/outer perimeter of a facility or campus to detect or prevent individuals or groups from committing acts injurious to others or to property.
• Intervenes to terminate injurious acts, conducts searches for weapons or contraband, and detains individuals for further investigation or arrest.
• Directs visitors to personnel and services within a facility.
• Investigates questionable acts or behavior observed or reported on premises.
• Pursues, apprehends, and detains persons observed injuring others or damaging property.
• Participates in securing facilities and conducting searches.
• Ensures that only authorized personnel are permitted access to restricted areas.
• Responds to reports of ill or injured visitors or employees.
• Monitors alarm systems and electronic surveillance equipment.
• Reports safety hazards and writes daily activity reports.
• Operates miscellaneous equipment and/or motor vehicles.
• Issues non-moving citations for routine infractions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

AGE

Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.

EDUCATION

Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent high school proficiency.

LICENSE

A valid California class C driver license is required.

PHYSICAL CLASS

IV - Arduous

WORK CONDITIONS

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department operates seven days a week, 24-hours a day. Appointees must be willing to:

• Work any shift.
• Work overtime and consecutive shifts.
• Work any day of the year.
• Deal with people in volatile situations.

EXAMINATION CONTENT

The examination will consist of a computer-based multiple-choice test weighted 100%. You must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher to be placed on the eligible register.
