Position Overview

The Division of Developmental Disabilities is seeking to hire a Security Officer Sergeant for the Murray Developmental Center located in Centralia, Illinois to provide security to all areas on an assigned shift. Responds to disturbance calls, reports unsafe and hazardous conditions, conducts fire drills, responds to fire alarms and searches for missing patients. Secures patients personal property and escorts/transports individuals to different locations of Murray Center and in the community. Conducts investigations of alleged events, gathers witness statements and evidence, and prepares written reports for Murray Development Center and OIG. Travels in performance of job duties.

Essential Functions
  • Provides security to all areas of Murray Developmental Center on an assigned shift.
  • Serves as designated lead worker.
  • Conducts investigations of alleged events, gathers witness statements and evidence, and prepares written reports for Murray Development Center and Office of Inspector General (OIG).
  • Patrols Murray Center grounds and buildings by foot and vehicles to look for breaches of security, unsafe and hazardous conditions.
  • Assists Center staff with management of combative residents.
  • Secures patients personal property and escorts/transports residents to different locations of Murray Center and in the community.
  • Enforces various traffic incidents, including speeding and parking regulations.
  • In the absence of the Security Officer Chief, acts as a back‑up in handling staff coverage and staff coordination.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.
  • Requires one (1) year of experience in safety and protection service or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) years of professional experience working with security requirements and regulations for a public or private organization.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience working with emergency response procedures including fire safety and controls for a public or private organization.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience participating/conducting investigations into allegations of burglaries, vandalism, individual injuries and traffic accidents.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience providing leadership, directing and supervising staff for apublic or private organization.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience preparing reports.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
Conditions of Employment
  • Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Requires the ability to work in a 24 hour “on-call” basis.
  • Requires the ability to climb stairs, chase runaways.
  • Requires the ability to physically restrain individuals as necessary to prevent injury to individual or others.
  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires the ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.

  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
