Job summary

Columbus Metropolitan Library is seeking a Security Officer, Rover (40 hrs.) to protect multiple library locations in Columbus, Ohio. This full-time position covers Barnett, Hilltop, Northside, and Parsons Branches and requires a flexible schedule.

Provides flexible security coverage at various library branches based on operational needs, staffing requirements, and emergency response situations. Ensures an orderly, safe, and secure environment for customers and staff; addresses disruptive or offensive behavior, unsafe conditions and minimizes theft of library property. Ensures a positive customer experience.

Position Schedules:

  • Thursday - 9am-6pm
  • Alternating Friday/Saturday - 9am-6pm
  • 1 in 5 Sundays: 1pm-5pm
  • Thursday - 11pm-8pm
  • Alternating Friday/Saturday - 9am-6pm
  • 1 in 5 Sundays: 1pm-5pm

Northside:

  • Monday - 11am-8pm
  • Tuesday - Thursday - 9am-6pm
  • Alternating Friday/Saturday - 9am-6pm
  • 1 in 5 Sundays: 1pm-5pm

Parsons:

  • Monday - 9am-6pm
  • Tuesday-Thursday - 11am-8pm
  • Alternating Friday/Saturday - 9am-6pm
  • 1 in 5 Sundays: 1pm-5pm

What You’ll Do:

  • Reports to assigned branch based on daily operational and staffing needs, which may differ from designated home location.
  • Patrols buildings and grounds at regular intervals and appropriately handles observed irregularities or problems. Prevents theft of Library property and follows all issued post orders.
  • Uses non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to diplomatically confront people engagedindisruptive,offensiveorinappropriatebehavior;suspendsfrompropertyasnecessary.
  • Ensures a positive customer experience by greeting customers, answering directional questions and participating in organization-wide initiatives/specialevents.
  • Responds to, investigates, and reports any safety hazard, security incident, parking enforcement or emergency, including reviewing CCTV footage asneeded.
  • Ensures that the building is secure at closing and that all staff and customers depart safely. Completes issued closing checklistdaily.
  • Maintainsaprofessionalappearancebykeepinguniformingoodconditionandpromptlyreporting uniform needs to Securitymanagement.
  • Carries all necessary equipment in working order while on duty and promptly reports equipment needs to Securitymanagement.
  • Collaborates with law enforcement on public safety issues. Files police reports and appears in court asneeded.
  • Assists in emergency response drills and other training throughout theyear.
  • Assists with testing and validation of security equipment (lockdown buttons, alarm panels, panic buttons, security cameras, etc.) asneeded.
  • Assists physically challenged customers entering or leaving libraryfacilities, including as part of emergency evacuations.
  • Rendersfirstaidinmedicalemergencies.Contactstrainedmedicalprofessionalsasappropriate.
  • Documents incidents in the reporting software according toguidelines.
  • Brings serious issues or those with significant risk to Security and location management for awareness andresolution.
  • Quickly adapts to varying branch environments, customer populations, building layouts, and security concerns while ensuring consistent application of library policies and security procedures.
  • Maintains flexibility to adjust work assignments, reporting locations, and schedules on short notice in response to changing operational needs.
  • Maintains accurate and timely administrative records, including mileage logs, incident reports, and other required documentation in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • 1-3 years of relevant customer service or security experience or training required.
  • Valid driver license which meets the minimum requirements of CML’s vehicle insurance policy and access to a personal vehicle to promptly report to varied work locations as assigned.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to carry and use Oleoresin Capsicum (OC or pepper spray) upon receiving necessary training and in appropriate situations.
  • Upon receiving necessary training, ability to respond quickly, effectively, and appropriately when it is clear that the physical safety of staff and/or customers is endangered.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings, willing to carry a cellular telephone as directed by management for response to library emergencies and service requests. Work schedule includes rotational on-call duties.
  • Ability to respond to assignment changes with professionalism and maintain effective working relationships with staff and leadership across multiple locations.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to travel efficiently between assigned locations and arrive on time for scheduled shifts.
  • Must have the ability to actively patrol (on foot) and use stairs throughout the duration of their shift and to quickly respond to incidents.
  • Ability to operate library technology including personal computer, email, software programs (i.e., Windows/Microsoft Office) and other job-related equipment and systems.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences or commercial vehicles (e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals, and/or working in moderate outdoor weather conditions).

Work requires occasional exerting of up to 50 lbs. of force and the frequent exerting of up to 20 lbs. of force. In emergency situations, work may also require sprinting short distances, quickly ascending and descending stairs, performing CPR and exerting in excess of 50 lbs. of force.
