About Our Job

The Denver Public Library (DPL) is a growing urban library system that serves the City & County of Denver. DPL sees more than 4 million visitors every year across its 27 locations, serves Denver’s most vulnerable communities through outreach and mobile services, hosts thousands of programs a year and manages a collection of more than 1.4 million physical and digital materials. DPL is hiring a Night Shift Security Officer to work at the Central Library in downtown Denver to help create positive experiences for library customers by maintaining a safe and secure environment for customers and staff. You'll receive on-the-job training to develop skills and abilities related to the position, including certification in First Aid, CPR and in the usage of an AED, Narcan usage, defensive tactics and verbal de-escalation training.

This position will be expected to work between the hours of 10:30PM - 7AM or 12:00AM to 8:30AM. A 12% shift differential bonus will be added to your hourly pay. These hours are subject to change due to operational need.

This position is based at the Central Library, which only has pay to park options, but regular employees are eligible for an ECO Pass that allows you to utilize RTD transit options. We provide uniforms and training to all of our officers to ensure they are well equipped for all situations.

  2. Knowledge of safety and security in a public setting.
  3. Knowledge of emergency procedures, safety hazards and how to delegate to a team.
  4. Ability to use workplace technology effectively including email, calendar, internet, databases, video conferencing, and other software.
  5. Ability to thrive working in a diverse environment with constant public contact.
  6. Ability to creatively solve problems, and handle stressful situations in a positive manner, including situations involving trauma, mental illness, and substance abuse.
  7. Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity and sense of humor in working with customers of all ages and backgrounds, coworkers and community.
  8. Skill in de-escalation and positive communication.
  9. Ability to complete concise and grammatically correct reports.
  10. Ability to pass a physical and mental fitness examination and a background check after the offer to hire has been made.
  11. Ability to successfully complete First Aid/CPR/AED, Narcan, Verbal De-escalation, and Defensive Tactics training.
  12. Ability to obtain an unarmed security guard license issued by the City and County of Denver.
  13. Experience with Trauma Informed Care or Mental Health First Aid preferred.
  14. A demonstrated commitment to developing and maintaining a welcoming environment for young people, including babies, toddlers, preschoolers, grade schoolers, and teens.
  15. One year of experience working with security or loss prevention preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

Experience Requirement: One (1) year of experience working with security and safety issues, including reporting unauthorized activity or emergencies.

Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.

License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver’s License at the time of application.

Requires possession of an Unarmed Business Guard License issued by the City and County of Denver at the time of employment.

Current certification in first aid and CPR by the American Red Cross required at the time of application.

Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
