Job summary

Banner Health in Mesa, Arizona seeks a K-9 Officer to patrol hospital campuses and ancillary sites with a trained canine partner. You will help protect patients, visitors and staff while responding to emergencies and enforcing security procedures.

The role requires K9 training, NPCA certification within 12 months, and a minimum three years in security, plus a valid driver’s license and fingerprint clearance. You will report to Security leadership and may act as Lead Officer on duty.

As a Banner K-9 Officer you will respond to emergency situations, patrol service areas including Hospital campus, and ancillary sites such as Urgent cares and Outpatient facilities. We pride ourselves on providing a safe and secure environment for our highly skilled and compassionate staff so they can focus on providing excellent care for our patients.

Our K-9 Security Officers do take their K-9 partners home with them, so it’s important for you to have a place of residence and transport that would allow for a large animal crate. (A home-check will be completed during the screening process.) Our K-9 Officers play a pivotal role and provide the highest level of force at our facilities. We are looking for individuals interested in expanding their Security career.

Shift B: (Wed-Sat) 1/2 Wed - 12 noon-6pm, then Thur - Sat 6 am-6 pm
Successful candidates will be physically fit and able to maintain sufficient physical fitness to successfully pass the functional capacity evaluation (FCE), which includes completing 44 steps and 20 down ups in under 2 minutes.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position tours the facilities and grounds with a trained canine (K9); assists with the welfare and safety of personnel and patients; investigates critical incidents; assists employees, patients and visitors; interfaces with emergency response agencies; secures doors; monitors parking and traffic control. Performs assigned security duties promptly and accurately. The officer and K9 work as a team and supports security duties by using the K9 for searching, crowd control, detecting explosives, and as a deterrent for violent confrontations through the K9’s presence or physical abilities. This position may serves as the Lead Officer (i.e. OIC) on an assigned shift or at an assigned location, which includes acting as a resource to other officers, coordinating their activities and assisting the supervisor. Works varied assignments and shifts.

CORE FUNCTIONS
  • 1. Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills and be customer service oriented in all contacts with patients, visitors and staff.
  • 2. Tours and inspects facility and grounds frequently to assist in maintaining a safer and more secure environment. Assists employees with security related matters and enforces parking regulations and traffic control. Responds to all emergency codes for assistance and control.
  • 3. Investigates and completes written reports of complaints, critical security incidents and unusual activities involving patients, employees and visitors; submits all reports to the security leadership by the end of the shift in which the report occurs. Maintains an accurate log of all relevant security activities during each shift. Maintain accurate K9 training logs and monthly activities.
  • 4. Locks and unlocks facility doors at prescribed times. Checks unoccupied areas and sets the alarms when appropriate. Does valuable pick-ups from departments, logs pick-ups and successfully delivers the contents to the appropriate destination department. Releases bodies from the morgue, ensuring that all paperwork is complete. Checks alarms to ensure they are in proper working order. Escorts patients, visitors and employees. Assist clinical staff with patient room searches and in restraining and handling disruptive patients.
  • 5. Presents a professional appearance and demeanor at all times. Follows instructions and is aware of and follows safe work practices. Must satisfactorily complete competencies as required by the department during the conditional period. Is able to demonstrate and successfully use all required competencies annually.
  • 6. Completes defensive tactics satisfactorily, OC pepper spray, and nonviolent crisis intervention programs annually.
  • 7. Assists the supervisor by orienting new officers, helping with the initial investigation into employee attendance and/or performance issues, researches complaints, or follow-up with other departments on investigations. Assists with special projects as assigned by Security Administration. Acts as a role model and leader for other officers. May be assigned to assist the K9 Unit Director with training new K9 officers.
  • 8. Provides daily care of the K9 to include feeding, exercising, grooming, medical care, and cleaning of the K9’s kennel. Keep the K9 physically fit through training and exercise. Keep the K9 at an acceptable level of readiness to be able to pass K9 evaluations. May perform public demonstrations as a K9 team.
  • 9. Reports directly to the Security leader or the manager/director when the supervisor in not on duty. This position interacts internally with staff, physicians, visitors, volunteers and patients. External customers are law enforcement agencies and emergency service agencies. The position is system wide and officers may be assigned to work at any facility as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • Requires completion of a Banner Health approved K9 training program within three months of hire in an eligible or required position. Requires National Police Canine Association (NPCA) Handler Certification within 12 months of hire in an eligible or required position. Must certify annually. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.
  • Must possess a strong knowledge and understanding of security as normally demonstrated through three years of progressively responsible security or related experience.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform physical requirements of the position. Capabilities will be demonstrated through the successful completion of similarly related skills testing. This physical skills assessment will then be conducted on a bi-annual basis and employees must successfully meet the requirements to remain in role.
  • Must have proper facilities at place of residence and transportation to ensure the health and well-being of the K9, including room to store a kennel. Must agree and sign K9 Conditions Agreement, Education Loan Agreement, and Promissory Note.
  • Employees must possess a Fingerprint Clearance Card within 60 days of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment. Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital must have a fingerprint clearance card at time of hire and must sign a Criminal History Affidavit upon hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prefer experience in a health care setting.
  • Prefer experience as a Law Enforcement/Military/Security K9 Officer.
  • Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
