Summary Description: Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, provides protection to hospital, patients, visitors, employees and their property.

Responsibilities
- Presents a visible security presence to prevent criminal activity; performs patrols of assigned areas; remains aware of the environment and observes potential security risks; takes appropriate action to prevent or suppress activity contrary to hospital rules and regulations and which poses a safety hazard to persons or property.
- Assists patients, guests and staff by providing information; controls access by checking badges and identification; prevents entry of unauthorized persons into hospital areas; checks packages entering or leaving the building and grounds.
- Performs public service duties as needed (escorts, assisting locked-out individuals, opening/locking doors, battery boosts); assists with restraints and lifting of patients as needed.
- Investigates complaints regarding parking, safety and security matters, and prepares reports documenting events, investigations, property, safety hazards, and repair requests.
- Pats parking lots/decks as needed; directs traffic on hospital premises as required; ensures compliance with parking regulations and observes hazardous conditions.
- Monitors security and fire equipment (alarms, cameras, gates); answers telephones and provides information to the public and hospital staff as needed.
- Engages in opportunities for education and training in criminal law, first aid, defensive tactics and other topics relevant to security.
- Assists in releasing bodies from morgue; responds to Emergency Codes per Hospital/Security Department policies.
Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years experience in security and/or public law enforcement or military police.
- OR: Minimum of two years college coursework in criminal justice, security administration or related program, and three (3) years experience in security and/or public law enforcement or military police.
- OR: Completion of State of Michigan MCOLES certified police academy and three (3) years experience in security and/or public law enforcement or military police.
- OR: Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, security administration or related area with participation in security or law enforcement through an internship or volunteer work such as police reserve program.
- Valid State of Michigan driver’s license; must be eligible for coverage as a driver of DMC vehicles by the DMC’s insurance carrier.
Skills Required
- Ability to meet state certification requirements under Public Act 330 and standards established by Michigan State Police and the Detroit Medical Center for Act 330 certification.
- Interpersonal skills, self-confidence and physical conditioning to confront and control potentially hostile persons with minimal risk of injury or disruption to hospital operation.
- Analytical and observational ability to recognize suspicious behavior, criminal activity and safety hazards.
- Verbal and written communication skills to prepare complete, coherent and concise reports of events and investigations.
