Job Description

The Security Officer I reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Under the direction of Security Leadership, this position is responsible for adhering to established policies and procedures to protect the hospital from theft and damage; provides protection for patients, visitors, associates, and medical staff; investigates and resolves disturbances; restrains patients upon proper direction and assistance of medical/clinical staff.

IMPORTANT: THIS IS A CASUAL POSITION, meaning hours are not guaranteed. NO BENEFITS.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate and quell hospital incidents and disturbances to maintain security.
  • Complete descriptive reports for supervisory personnel.
  • Notify appropriate city officials (police and fire) and prepare reports.
  • Perform regular patrols of hospital buildings and grounds to protect patients and property, both on foot and mobile.
  • Investigate hazardous conditions, theft, criminal activity, and other security issues.
  • Monitor access control systems, alarms, and security video systems.
  • Control traffic to ensure access for emergency vehicles, patients, visitors, and during incidents or helicopter transports.
  • Maintain security of restricted areas by checking and locking doors as needed.
  • Provide escorts for staff to their vehicles upon request.
  • Deliver deceased bodies to the morgue and release them to authorized persons per policies.
  • Respond to emergency codes following departmental guidelines.
  • Report activities or deviations requiring disciplinary action or follow-up to the department manager.
  • Enforce hospital policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a professional, approachable, and service-minded image at all times.
  • Conduct contraband searches for safety as needed.
  • Monitor individuals or situations to ensure safety.
  • Oversee staff parking permit process and compliance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Successful completion of IAHSS Basic exam within 90 days of hire
  • Maintain IAHSS Basic certification
  • Current Basic Life Support certification through American Heart Association within 9 months
  • Complete Northwestern Medicine Defensive Tactics in Healthcare within 6 months
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong report-writing skills
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Physical ability to lift/carry up to 65 pounds, push/pull up to 75 pounds, stand and walk during patrols, respond quickly in emergencies, and occasionally lift heavy objects.
Preferred:
  • Experience in healthcare security, law enforcement, or military
  • Valid FOID card
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree
