Job description

Campus Security Officers are responsible for ensuring the comfort, safety, and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors at the University of New England. Security Officers help maintain a safe environment and minimize the potential for property loss or damage by conducting high-visibility patrols on foot and in University-owned vehicles, monitoring CCTV equipment, and overseeing radio communications. Officers provide a wide variety of services to the campus community and are expected to proactively seek opportunities to deliver exceptional customer service.

Security Officers enforce the University of New England rules and regulations, the Office of Student Resolutions Conduct Code, and coordinate with law enforcement in enforcing state statutes. Security Officers have a critical role as first responders to campus emergencies and critical incidents such as active threat situations, bomb threats and mental health emergencies. Security Officers respond to disturbances and mitigate disruptive conduct and coordinate with local, county and state agencies as necessary. Security Officers recognize potential safety concerns and take measures to mitigate these concerns.

Security Officers day-to-day activities include routine patrols of campus property, completing daily building opening and closings and parking enforcement.

This position is based on the Portland campus. The expected pay is $21.00 per hour (annualized to $43,680). Total compensation is between $59,722 and $74,851, depending on which medical and dental plans are selected.

Responsibilities

• Defend self and others from unauthorized use of non-deadly force using departmentally trained techniques, including but not limited to the use pepper spray and handcuffs as necessary.
• Patrol University property to prevent and detect signs of intrusion, theft, and life safety concerns and maintain safety during Campus events. This includes making regular inspection tours of campus noting unusual occurrences and ensuring all necessary doors and buildings are properly secured.
• Monitor individuals on campus, watching for unauthorized persons, suspicious activity, disturbances, and policy violations, and reporting to the appropriate authorities.
• Investigate suspicious activity, security concerns, and criminal incidents. Gather and process evidence, and document findings in written and verbal reports.
• Respond to campus disturbances (e.g., disorderly conduct, underage drinking, illicit drug use) and conduct room searches as necessary.
• Respond to campus emergencies, including critical incidents, active threats, and all-hazard situations (e.g., active shooter, bomb threats, mental health crises, weather-related emergencies).
• Contact on-call supervisor as needed for emergency situations.
• Maintain awareness of University property, life safety systems, and emergency plans, including the proper use of fire extinguishers.
• Respond to accidents and medical emergencies, providing First Aid, CPR , Narcan, and/or Stop the Bleed as necessary.
• Liaise with local police and fire departments as needed.
• Ensure knowledge and compliance with all University and departmental standard operating procedures.
• Provide prompt, courteous service to students, staff, and visitors including medical and courtesy escorts on campus.
• Escort students, staff, and visitors to various locations on Campus and provide protection as necessary.
• Escort and remove persons from Campus as needed.
• Address and resolve any safety concerns during shifts, including submitting work orders or notifying appropriate staff.
• Monitor building systems, including boilers and refrigeration/freezer units, notifying Facilities as needed.
• Monitor CCTV and review footage for security and investigative purposes.
• Answer phone calls, take messages, provide information, and assist with inquiries.
• Enforce University rules and regulations, issue parking tickets, and notify violators of infractions.
• Write clear, concise incident reports and support documentation (e.g., photos, video).
• Provide coverage at designated campus athletic events.
  Assist with campus snow removal operations as needed.
• Cross training as Dispatcher and Safe Ride operator preferred.
• Provide public assistance such as lock-out services, jump-starts, and routine information requests.
• Assist administration with investigations as assigned.
• Maintain confidentiality of all departmental and University-related information.
• Complete all mandatory departmental Police One training.
• Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required, with at least one year of experience in security, military, or law enforcement preferred.

• Ability to respond to emergency situations calmly, effectively, and professionally.
• Strong attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize tasks, stay organized, and follow through on responsibilities.
• Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to think clearly, remain calm under pressure, and exercise sound judgment when resolving problems.
• Ability to follow directions and respond to commands.
• Able to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Willingness to be trained in and utilize handcuffs and OC spray.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of departmental and University-related information.
• Must possess a valid Maine driver’s license and be able to safely operate motor vehicles, golf carts, and other department equipment.
• Must be certified—or able to obtain certification—in First Aid, CPR / AED , Narcan, Stop the Bleed, and other equipment as assigned.
• Ability to oversee and support student staff in the absence of a Security Officer II.
