Security Officer Job Description

Under the general direction of the Security Director, Operations Manager, Supervisor, or Charge Officer, the Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for hospital patients, visitors, and staff. This is achieved by enforcing hospital security policies, patrolling assigned areas, and promptly reporting hazards or unusual incidents.

The key responsibilities include:

  1. Providing protection through patrols, investigations, and monitoring alarms and surveillance systems.
  2. Offering escorts for staff, visitors, and patients upon request.
  3. Apprehending criminal violators when necessary and appropriate.
  4. Responding to emergencies and applying patient restraints as needed.
  5. Patrolling hospital buildings and grounds, focusing on areas with known security issues.
  6. Identifying unsafe conditions and securing areas to prevent theft, injuries, or damages.
  7. Maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  8. Conducting investigations into thefts, shortages, and criminal misconduct, and keeping supervisors informed.
  9. Preparing accurate reports and maintaining logs of incidents.
  10. Managing valuables, evidence, and ensuring their safekeeping.
  11. Participating in fire drills and assisting with workplace violence victims and medical emergencies.
  12. Controlling pedestrian and vehicular traffic, acting as a first responder to HazMat incidents, and assisting motorists.
  13. Creating safety awareness among hospital community members and participating in quality improvement initiatives.
  14. Troubleshooting parking equipment and maintaining uniforms and security equipment.
  15. Performing customer service duties and assisting with threat assessments, including CJIS documentation review.
  16. Working flexible shifts and performing additional duties as assigned.
    Qualifications

    Education: Minimum high school diploma; an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field is preferred.

    Experience: No experience required; 1-3 years of security experience preferred.

    Licenses/Certifications: Valid Massachusetts Driver's license or equivalent, background check, and various certifications including workplace violence prevention, first aid, CPR, AED, and ICS training. Additional certifications may be required within specified timelines.

    Knowledge and Skills

    Strong customer service and communication skills, sound judgment, team collaboration, confidentiality, cultural competence, de-escalation skills, crisis management, report writing, computer proficiency, and physical fitness are essential.

    Physical Environment

    Work involves a fast-paced, physically demanding environment requiring walking, standing, running short distances, lifting, and interacting with potentially aggressive individuals in all weather conditions.
