Job Title:Security Officer
Employment Status:Full-time, Non-Exempt
Department:Security
Reports To:Security Supervisor
Full-time shifts are 5 days a week, 8 hours per day

Areas of Responsibilities
The security officer will ensure the safety and security of visitors, tenants, and employees at the Brooklyn Navy Yard while providing excellent customer service at various posts throughout the Navy Yard.
Access Control
- Be governed by and demonstrate Courtesy, Professionalism, & Respect at all posts and during all assignments and interactions
- Be aware of, and inspect, post(s) or section(s) for conditions requiring attention; and report immediately to the supervisor and the Command Center any unusual crime, occurrence, accident or condition
- Render all necessary service in assigned area and as directed
- Familiarize self with the everyday routine of individuals doing business or frequenting post or section
- Investigate suspicious conditions on the post
- Give attention to hazardous conditions
- Maintain activity log and completes daily reports
- Monitor radio
- Be responsible for, become familiar with, and have working knowledge of Post Orders
Motor Patrol
- Conduct mounted and dismounted patrols of BNYDC areas in accordance Post Orders; during all hours, and all types of weather.
- Report observed unsecure and unsafe conditions.
- Be prepared to augment supervised gate guard posts during times of peak traffic, when directed by the Sergeant.
- Enforce traffic rules, monitor illegal dumping assist with transportation of Security Officers.
- Assist the Sergeant with relaying equipment and supplies to Officers out on posts.
- Monitor vessels at Piers and Dry Docks.
- Monitor vehicles parked at loading docks of Buildings
- Assist Sergeants in directing or escorting emergency response vehicle to emergencies at the yard
Command Center
- Supervise radio/communications checks with all posts following each shift change over.
- Sergeant is absent from a post, provide guards with timely guidance (via phone or radio) concerning post operations or appropriate response actions if requested (or apparently required), until the Sergeant can arrive.
- Communicate incident or environmental information and activity that is observable via video surveillance to guard force or third-party response agencies which may support situational awareness prior to arrival at the incident scene, and (when requested) during the incident response.
- Enforce proper radio procedures.
- Record al reports received by guard posts, radio or telephone in security database and make necessary notification when required to do so by Supervisor.
- Monitor emergency services and marine band base stations; inform appropriate gate or post of approaching emergency vehicles/vessels.
- Monitor the communications (via shared radios or base stations) of major tenants with internal security forces. Perform communications checks once daily.
- Track vessels by Piers and Dry Docks by name, ship type, general cargo type, listing arrival and departure times to Sergeant on duty
- Report degraded or interrupted video surveillance, access control or communications systems performance to the Sergeant on duty
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Good writing and verbal communication skills
- Basic computer skills
Qualifications
- 8-hour & 16-hour Security Training Certificates required
- Security License required
- Valid NYS Driver’s License required
- Introduction to Radio Communications (LET540) (within three months)
- Certificate of Fitness F-01 Citywide Fire Guard for Impairment, City of New York (within three months)
- Certificate of Fitness F-04 for Temporary Indoor/ Outdoor Place of Assembly Safety Personnel (within three months)
- CPR / Basic First Aid /AED Training, American Red Cross or American Heart Association (within six months)
- Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) (LET543) (within one year)
