Security Officer
The Security Officer provides security services to VCUHS by courteously assisting staff, visitors, and patients; enforcing hospital rules and regulations; projecting a positive image; and promoting a safe healthcare environment.
The Security Officer conveys an image of professionalism and behaves in a manner conducive to good hospital and community relations. This is a non-sworn security position.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
- Valid Virginia Driver's License and acceptable driving record that reflects safe and lawful motor vehicle operation
- Registration as an Unarmed Security Officer by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (VDCJS) or successful completion of the VDCJS Unarmed Security Officer curriculum within the first six months of employment
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment:
- Valid Virginia Driver's License and acceptable driving record
Experience REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of security and/or law enforcement measures and techniques generally acquired during 6 to 12 months of on-the-job training or college curriculum in Administration of Justice
Experience PREFERRED:
- One (1) year of security, public safety, or law enforcement work experience
Education/training REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Education/training PREFERRED:
- Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field
Independent actions required:
- De-escalate agitated patients individually and as part of a team
- Prevent potentially risky or violent situations
Additional position requirements:
- Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, and extended hours based on organizational needs

Physical requirements:
- Lifting 20-50 lbs.
- Prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (stairs, ladder, other)
Mental/Sensory skills:
- Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking
Emotional requirements:
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple priorities, adapt to frequent changes, and work in noisy environments
