JOB SUMMARY

The Security Officer serves Southeastern University by providing a safe environment for thecampus community.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to:Shift Supervisor (Security Sergeant)

Supervisory Responsibility:N/A

Indirect Supervisory Responsibility: N/A

LOCATION

Lakeland Main Campus

ESSENTIAL DUTIES -May include, but is not limited to the following:

  • Patrol campus and maintain awareness for suspicious persons, criminal incidents, unsafe conditions, or security threats.
  • Immediately relay emergency information to assigned Polk County Sheriff's Office personnel for the issuance of emergency notifications.
  • Calmly respond to emergency or crisis situations to ensure the safety of the campus community and involved persons, to include assisting in evacuations or securing buildings for shelter-in-place situations.
  • Gather detailed information and ask relevant questions about reported or observed security-related incidents.
  • Complete detailed written reports to document any security-related incidents that occur on campus or the university's Clery Act geography.
  • Staff the Security Post to provide information to visitors, students, and staff, answer phone calls, monitor surveillance cameras, and dispatch officers as needed.
    Interact with visitors, students, and employees in a professional and courteous manner and provide responsive customer service, as directed.
  • Dress in full uniform and maintain a neat and professional appearance in compliance with university policies.
  • Comply with the Safety and Security General Orders.
  • Ensure compliance with the Clery Act, the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Title IX.
  • Perform all duties as required during inclement weather, if necessary.
    Safely operate university-owned golf carts and shuttle buses.

ADDITIONAL/NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

All remaining duties are considered "nonessential" within the context of the ADA, which means that the function could be reassigned to another employee in order to allow a disabled individual to hold the position. Alternatively, the manager could try to provide a reasonable accommodation so that the disabled individual could perform the function.

Required- Class D Security License, valid state-issued driver's license.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

No previous security experience required.

Preferred:

At least 1 year prior law enforcement, military or security experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Required:

Communication skills, observational skills, ability to use computer equipment, stress management during critical incidents , and the ability to meet physical requirements (see job description).

Preferred:

Critical incident response training, de-escalation training, familiarity with Google Suite software, report-writing, radio operation, customer service.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

All employees are responsible for maintaining an environment that is free from discrimination, intimidation, harassment, including sexual harassment.

  • This position is considered {{Emergency Response Reporting}} for the purposes of Emergency Response.
Physical Requirements:
  • Able to stand unassisted for extended periods of time.
  • Able to walk the campus area unassisted.
  • Able to lift 30-45 lbs.

Schedule:

Security personnel are on campus 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, including holidays and school breaks. Officers are assigned a fixed schedule based on the following shifts:

2nd Shift - 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM

TRAINING

All new hires and employees transferring into a new position will have a 90-day probationary period within which to learn the functions of the job and to be evaluated. Following the probationary period, the employee can transition to regular status, have the probationary period extended in order to receive more training, or employment can be terminated. Required compliance training is as follows:

Class D Security License training, Clery Act training, Title IX training, FERPA training, Run, Hide, Fight training, response to fire alarms.

SAFETY
  • SEU promotes a safe working environment. Employees are responsible for completing assigned tasks safely and efficiently, and supervisors are responsible for creating and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Employees must report any unsafe work conditions or practices, as well as any near-miss incidents, to their supervisor and Risk Management.
  • Work-related injuries must be immediately reported to Security and Human Resources. When life or limb are at risk, please dial 911. Supervisors and employees should ensure that injury/accident reports are submitted to the Office of Human Resources within 24 hours of the incident.
  • Emergency Employees report for or must remain at work in emergency situations. Dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to this position, unless instructed otherwise by your direct supervisor or a member of the Leadership Team.
SCREENING

All full-time positions at SEU are deemed security-sensitive and require background checks. Employees required to drive their own personal vehicle, a rental car or an SEU vehicle in performance of their duties must pass an MVR records check and meet the requirements of the University’s insurance carrier in order to meet the requirements of the position.
