Job summary

Gemological Institute of America (GIA) seeks a Security Officer II to maintain a secure environment for staff, students and visitors in the Midtown Manhattan campus. You will monitor CCTV, operate access control systems and patrol the institute while maintaining a visible, professional presence.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED and 1–3 months related experience. NY Guard card, First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications are required at time of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Represent GIA as a professional security representative to employees, students, and visitors.
  • Monitor CCTV equipment to ensure it is operational.
  • Operate security console and access control equipment.
  • Patrol Institute grounds and provide a visible presence.
  • Escort visitors and vendors as needed.
  • Submit written security reports to Security Supervisor.
  • Respond to alarms as directed.
  • Assist in evacuation and crowd control during emergencies.

The Location

This position is located in the heart of the diamond district in mid-town Manhattan, New York. This is an onsite role.

Job Overview

Ensures a secure and safe environment for GIA personnel, students and the public, by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Represents GIA as a professional security representative to employees, students, and visitors.
  • Monitors and ensures that CCTV equipment is operational.
  • Operates security console and/or access control equipment.
  • Patrols the Institute grounds while providing a visible presence.
  • Aids in parking enforcement.
  • Directs and/or escorts visitors and vendors as needed.
  • Assists in special tours of the Institute.
  • Submits written reports to Security Supervisor on observations regarding security, maintenance or safety issues.
  • Responds to alarms as directed.
  • Provides GIA Education Department with additional security or safety issues.
  • Assists in evacuation and crowd control in the event of an emergency.
  • Responds to emergency situations on campus; administers first-aid as required.
  • Operates emergency equipment as needed.
  • Locates and operates emergency shut-off systems as needed.
  • Communicates effectively, gets along with coworkers and management, and deals with others effectively and professionally under pressure.
  • Other duties as assigned.
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
  • Intermediate to advanced level computer skills, including experience with current Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, etc.)
  • Ability to adapt to new software programs and technology.
  • Ability to write or type clear and concise reports.
  • Prior security console and/or access control use preferred.
  • Prior related security experience preferred.
Education And Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must have at time of hire and renew, as appropriate:

  • New York Guard card
  • First Aid certification card
  • Cardio-Pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification card
  • Automated External Defibrillation (AED) certification card
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT (if Applicable)
  • Work is performed in a designated professional office workstation and environment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Employee may be required to travel using commercial transportation resources.
Hourly Pay
  • $22.50 per hour
