Job summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Police and Public Safety Department seeks a Security Officer to patrol campus buildings, parking lots and facilities to ensure safety and deter hazards. Responsibilities include monitoring access, assisting visitors, recording incidents, and coordinating with police on request. The position starts at an hourly rate of $16.00 and requires a high school diploma or GED and a valid Alabama driver’s license or state ID. Onsite shift work is expected.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Inventories all assigned keys and takes notes to assure all scheduled buildings are locked or open for requests.
• Locks and unlocks all assigned area doors per schedule and for special requests.
• Observes for criminal activity or suspicious circumstances while locking/unlocking doors.
• If suspicious circumstances are noted, calls police for assistance immediately and remains to guide the responding officer.
• Creates a sense of safety and security on university properties.
• Takes necessary measures to reduce opportunities for crime within the University and its properties.
• Identifies criminal offenders and calls for police officers if apprehension is required or advisable.
• Cooperates with State, Municipal and other public agencies as required.
• Assists all persons seeking directions, information or assistance.
• Patrols all assigned areas with special attention to problem locations and rechecks.
• Observes infractions of university rules and reports incidents as required.
• Demonstrates the ability to follow departmental policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Police and Public Safety Department seeks a Security Officer to perform prescribed duties on fixed posts, and to patrol campus buildings, parking lots and other University facilities to assure all areas are secure and free of hazards and suspicious/unauthorized persons. To patrol all assigned areas, giving special attention to problem areas. To assist visitors with directions and street locations, as well as various departments in the hospital and on campus.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Observes for criminal activity or suspicious circumstances in the form of persons, places or things while locking and unlocking doors.
• If suspicious circumstances are noted, calls police for assistance immediately and remains in the area to guide or assist the responding officer.
• Creates a sense of safety and security on university properties.
• Takes all necessary measure to reduce opportunity for criminal activity and the commission of crime within the University and its properties.
• Identifies criminal offenders and calls for police officers if apprehension is required or advisable.
• Cooperates with and assists State, Municipal and other public agencies as required.
• Assists all persons seeking directions, information or assistance.
• Patrols all assigned areas giving special attention to and often rechecking those locations where security problems may be the most frequent.

Hourly starting salary- $16.00
