Job summary

DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan is seeking a full-time Security Officer to maintain a secure hospital environment in Detroit. You will patrol, assist visitors and staff, and enforce access control to prevent unauthorized entry, while adhering to hospital policies and safety protocols.

Ideal candidates bring a high school diploma with security/public safety experience or equivalent, plus relevant college coursework or MCOLES certification.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent plus four years security/public law enforcement or military police experience.
• Two years college coursework in criminal justice, security administration or related program, and three years security/public law enforcement or military police experience.
• Completion of State of Michigan MCOLES certified police academy and three years security/public law enforcement or military police experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, security administration or related area with internship/volunteer experience in security or law enforcement.

Responsibilities

• Presents a visible security presence to prevent criminal activity and patrols assigned areas.
• Assists patients, guests, and staff by providing information and controlling access via badges/passes.
• Responds to emergencies and enforces hospital policies and safety procedures.
• Investigates parking, safety, and security complaints; documents events and investigations.
• May direct traffic and monitor security systems; promotes safety and teamwork.

Job Description

• Presents a visible security presence to prevent criminal opportunity. Performs patrols of assigned area and maintains awareness of potential risks, taking appropriate action to prevent or suppress activity contrary to hospital rules and regulations.
• Assists patients, guests, and staff by providing general information. Provides access control by checking badges, passes, and identification to prevent unauthorized entry into business and patient care areas.
• Performs public service duties as needed (e.g., escorts patients, guests, or employees; assists persons locked out of vehicles or rooms; opens or locks doors; provides battery boosts) and assists with restraints and lifting of patients as required.
• Investigates complaints regarding parking, safety, and security matters; disorderly or suspicious persons; prepares reports documenting all significant events and investigations, crimes committed, lost or found property, safety hazards, and repair requests.
• May patrol parking lots and decks to maintain security, ensuring compliance with parking regulations and observing hazardous conditions. May direct traffic on hospital premises as required.
• Monitors security and fire equipment such as alarms, cameras, control gates, and the like; answers telephones and provides information to the public and hospital staff as needed.
• Engages in opportunities for additional education and training in criminal law, first aid, defensive tactics, and other topics relevant to security.
• Assists in releasing bodies from the morgue.
• Responds to emergency codes in accordance with Hospital and/or Security Department policies.
• Promotes the values of the DMC by demonstrating behaviors supportive of a commitment to quality, community welfare, respect and involvement, teamwork, open and effective communication, innovation and education, and efficient use of resources.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years experience in security and/or public law enforcement or military police.
• Minimum of two years college coursework in criminal justice, security administration or related program, and three (3) years experience in security and/or public law enforcement or military police.
• Completion of State of Michigan MCOLES certified police academy and three (3) years experience in security and/or public law enforcement or military police.
• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, security administration or related area with participation in security or law enforcement through an internship or volunteer work such as a police reserve program.
• Valid State of Michigan driver’s license. Must be eligible for coverage as a driver of DMC vehicles by the DMC’s insurance carrier.
