Job summary

Essex Regional Educational Services Commission seeks a dedicated Security Guard for a 12-month assignment in New Jersey. Responsibilities include patrolling district facilities, inspecting doors and windows, logging incidents, and coordinating with police as needed.

The role requires a High School Diploma and SORA certification, plus experience in security or public safety. Must maintain logs, manage visitors, and support drills and evacuations.

Responsibilities

• Reports concerns to Lead Security Guard and coordinates with police when required.
• Assists with evacuations and crisis response; maintains visitor logs and directs guests.
• Keeps confidentiality and documents incidents and observations in reports.

Job description

Responsibilities

• Patrols district buildings, schools and grounds to protect against illegal entry, acts of violence, vandalism, illegal drug activity, arson, and theft.
• Conducts regular inspections of windows, doors, and other points of entry to ensure that they are secure.
• Reports concerns and incidents which may require corrective action to Lead Security Guard.
• Patrols school/central office grounds to observe unauthorized persons or vehicles, parking violations, and overall security of the outside area including exterior lighting and emergency access routes.
• Checks identification of pupils, staff, and visitors entering the school/central office.
• Detains unauthorized persons; calls for police assistance in accordance with the district's security plan.
• Notifies police, fire department, or other appropriate authority of any situation requiring immediate attention.
• Encourages appropriate student conduct with regard to school rules and regulations.
• Assists visitors to the school/central office in receiving proper direction, assists in maintaining log of all visitors, and prevents unauthorized persons from entering the building.
• Assists with building evacuations, lock downs, etc.
• Interacts with central office, staff and students to assess and resolve problems/conflicts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Record-keeping and customary reporting:
  • Records all observations and conditions, and reports unusual occurrences or property damage to administration.
  • Submits written reports of all incidents of vandalism, violence, illegal drug activity, and security violations.
• Answers and directs incoming call when covering at central office.
• Maintains confidentiality at all times.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma.
• SORA Certified (Security Officer Registration Act).
• Experience in law enforcement, school security and/or public safety.
• Knowledge of security measures, fire prevention, and crowd control.
• Ability to maintain order and to work with groups and individuals on matters of security and crisis management.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
• Must be able to use technology efficiently such as computer, two-way radio, video monitors, buzz-in systems, electronic surveillance equipment and other devices selected by the District to be part of the school security system.
• Valid Driver's License.
• Must pass CHRU background check.
• Must have recent Tuberculosis screening.

Pay Rate

Annual Salary - $39,000
